CC Set Review: 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress

Post by architect »

Join the Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress.

Fire Breathing Fortress, released in 1993, was the castle for the Dragon Masters. This rocky fortress has a cave for the dragon, a jail, a wizard’s tower, a trap door, a secret entrance, and a dragon that drops rocks on invaders trying to reach the castle doors. The set includes a Wolfpack prisoner, one knight, a swordsman, an archer, a crossbowman, a wizard, the dragon, and various accessories.

Wow this set is actually smaller than I remember. I never owned the set,but what I really liked about this set was printed wall pieces. The set doesn't include any unique figure, and you could get the dragon in a smaller set.

This set is definitely not the best fortress LEGO has done. It is filled with lots of clunkers and has a petty weak and unrealistic design. The only saving grace this set has is the cool minifigures and the classic green dragon.

Value For Money: 2/5
Parts: 3/5
Alternate Models: 3.5/5
Play Experience:3.5/5
Overall Design: 2/5
Minifigures: 4/5

Overall Rating: 3/5!!

I always wanted one of these as a kid, but looking at it now, it's not terribly impressive.

The best parts are the printed wall/arch pieces, as well as the number of figures that you get and a dragon.
The flag, red roof piece, and horse headgear are also nice.

Other than that, lots of panels and a raised baseplate aren't exactly great, though I do use the raised plates on occasion when building elevated landscapes (they get covered with bricks).

Based on that, I'll give this a 3 out of 5

I agree with most that has been said about this set. I really wanted this set when I was younger, but settled for the Dark Dragon's Den and Majisto's Work Shop instead. I think that was probably a good choice, now that I've snagged this one from ebay. There is a lot of wasted open space that could have been put to better use here.

I do like the wild mountain look to the set. And I really like the trap door to drop people to the dragon's den. The smaller doors, printed wall piece, printed arch and red roof are all nice parts.

I never owned this set when I was younger but I finally own it now as a adult. I purchased it off of ebay a few years ago. The overall design is unique but nothing that memorable or special compared to other large castle sets from the 90s. The large black dragon head play feature is awkward and doesn't really feel like it belongs as part of the design. I like the base plate since it is the same as previous ones just with a new color variation. I would rate this set 6.5/10.

I've always liked the brick built dragon head over the gate.

I rec'ed this set as a Christmas gift in 1994, and it has been assembled ever since. The stone dragon is a lot of fun, as has been mentioned. Also the design of the fortress is novel. Yes it is not as realistic as some, but it is unique, creative, and fun!

I've got a pretty negative view of this one. It's chock full of large parts I hate, like the battlements, the red roof piece, the big jail door, the huge fence wall, the stairs, of course the CRAPP, even the printed panel is not my cup of tea. I do like the printed arch and the slopes with studs are awesome pieces. The figs are mostly one of my least favorite classic factions, though the wolfpack guy and Majisto help make up for that a bit. The big dragon head is kinda fun but ultimately silly.

Two thumbs down from me.

I had a friend who owned this set when it first appeared in the early/mid-90s. I was never that envious of it, much preferring the size and piece counts of my King's Castle, Black Knights Castle, et al. from the 80s. However, in retrospect I am jealous of never owning my own. I do not have one of these green throwback Dragons in my collection. In addition, and I'm shocked no one has mentioned this yet, this set comes with an all-too-infrequent Wolf Pack prisoner!? These guys are so rare, only 9 figures dispensed throughout 5 sets if I recall correctly. Thus, the rarity of the WP is seductive enough to warrant attention and admiration. I have two other versions of this baseplate (pirates and space), but this one might be the nicest paint job. I always admired the helmet work for this line, and the shields were among the first to sport the oval, extra long surface. Plus, the extra-long battle axe is choice and was an innovative eye popper at the time, along with the Wizard and his glowing wand. The red tent/steeple is a nice touch, as are the green bushes, an upgrade to the novelty green trees from the 80s. Thus, despite some "clunky" design features (everyone here is SO good at viewing the past through modern-tinted lenses), this set is a decent find.

7.5/10

I loved this set. The figures were by far one of the major draws but the mountain setting I loved as it had a massive cave/pit for the dragon to live in and upper areas for the men there. I did redo the tower some to make it a bit larger and I added a barbican. Pretty neat complex after that. Until a few years ago I had left it out but since my many moves it was dismantled.
