Hello, everyone.

Post by bronx »

I'm not really new, but I never really introduced myself and thought I would. I also joined after being a very long-time lurker during my current deployment out here in Afghanistan and never took the time to browse the entire site to see that introductions were welcomed and somewhat common practice.

I'm Bronx.

I was born and bred there (the borough in New York City) and lived there for most of my youth and adolescence. However, I joined the military and escaped with a waiver.

As mentioned, I am currently deployed in Afghanistan. I am told I am a glutton for pain and misery, as I have been overseas now for the past decade plus between Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and my present location. For the better portion of these eleven years I was in, what I've seen referred to as, my Dark Ages. Survival took precedence, I guess.

I wish I could remember the exact MOC I saw here that truly floored me, but that is exactly what it did. I found myself really inspired and drawn right back into the Castle and historic theme I had always loved as a kid as if it were a singularity. Since then, and after finding BrickLink, I have been out of control.

What probably kept me from registering sooner is my total lack of bricks. My living quarters does not lend itself much space. So, any brick purchases I send back stateside with my childhood collection. I couldn't stay away, though, and would purchase a minifigure or three and send it here. That quickly spiraled out and I have been amassing large quantities of troops here.

My goal is to build up four or five factions (Dragon Masters, Crown Knights, Kingdoms Lion Knights and some custom groups) into the several-hundred range, and build each of their kingdoms while telling a story.

Anyone that has ever posted anything has really been great for inspiration and ideas on what I could do. It makes me excited to hopefully eventually return to my collection. It also lends to the possibility of me joining LCC or one of those type groups, as I don't feel I could presently do much other than showcase an army to support one of the groups. Unless that is what someone needs . . . in which case, call upon my banners.

This is a great community of exceptional builders, though, and I am glad I've joined. I'm looking forward to hopefully interacting with more of you.

Thanks for your time in reading my ramblings. Have a wonderful day and holiday season.

Very respectfully,

Hey friend,

Glad to see an official intro. I've been curious, what do your fellow troops think of your hobby? What other sorts of hobbies do those with limited space take up over there? It's not like you can have a woodworking or retro car refurbishing hobby, I would think.

It seems like Lego would be a pretty good fit for over there, especially if all you need are a couple of partitioned containers for minifig parts / accessories :)

Thanks for the welcome and response. It's been overall very pleasant. Minimal complaints. :D

As with anything different, some find it odd. "Isn't that for kids?" They've become more open-minded after seeing some MOCs from here and other themes, though. "Megablocks. You can do that with LEGO?" So, that's been interesting and entertaining seeing some of their reactions. One of my guys was also pretty deep into building (Sci-Fi stuff), but left it alone after some personal issues many years back. He'll often ask what's new. I can't see him getting back into it; I think it's more of a vicarious thing. It's still nice, though.

Other hobbies? Gym and video games, my friend. Gym and video games. Without the gym or the PS3, I'm not sure what I would do! It's the same for most people I know. I'm the reigning fighting champ (primarily Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter 3rd Strike on PS3) and one of my teammates is a monster at FIFA and Madden. I'm also addicted to Borderands 2, if anyone needs a beast partner. But, when I'm on the road it's really just the former. Although, I just got a PS Vita (Merry Christmas!) for some of those long periods of sitting out in the middle of nowhere on the boring ops.

I chopped some blocks and threw my bed on top of them, and have my box of figs (in five shoe box size plastic containers) under it. So, you weren't far off at all on the needed space. But, to pull that box out to go through it would remove any and all available space, including on the bed. I'm surrounded by sorted bags when I do that. Ha.

Hey Bronx,

Belated welcome to CC and also thank you for your service to our country. I'm sure your postings haven't been really conducive to sight-seeing, but have you had a chance to see any ancient fortress type sites? Even if you don't get much chance to build, I always love seeing photos people take where they place minifigs in interesting settings. It's been ages since I've traveled anywhere outside the country (having kids tends to limit travel plans), but next time I do anything, I'm going to bring along a couple of figs to photograph wherever I go.

Greetings mate!

I also want to extend my gradititude to you, for serving and protecting our country, thanks a lot! I don't think I could be that brave. I think that's so cool that you're still expanding and growing your collection. I still wonder how I'll be able to do it when I'm older. I also hope to be able to incorporate Legos into some sort of teaching job later on. I hope all's going well for you. Cheers man! :)

Hi Bronx, bit belated, but welcome.

Enjoy your time here, castles and medieval are very captivating for some people!

Sounds a challenge building in the conditions your currently in, look forward to seeing what you come up with.
