Orthanc
Orthanc
I thought this needed its own thread, since people like me, who don't want to slog through a 10 page LoTR thread, would miss it otherwise. FBTB and eurobricks are reporting a new (almost UCS style) Orthanc set:

Edit - I'm going to add pictures to Steve's post so they'll be at the top of this thread. These are all taken from Happy Weasel's Flickr stream because, well, it doesn't seem like LEGO could be bothered to send a press release to Classic-Castle. -Bruce

Re: Orthanc
WOW!
I'm not that interested in the actual set (too much black), but that Grima Wormtounge torso is a MUST HAVE
Just saw Saurman's fig and he is fantastic as well. Off to Bricklink for me once these come out!

Re: Orthanc
Basically this. No interest in the set (because of space and time and money and boring adult reasons) but Wormtongue is definitely a must.AK_Brickster wrote:I'm not that interested in the actual set (too much black), but that Grima Wormtounge torso is a MUST HAVE

I just bounced up and down in my seat for excitement! Very cool!

Totally getting it.
Re: Orthanc
Oh, imagine this with dark bley!!!! One thing about this design and the colour, it will be very easy for anyone to "pump it up" to new heights and still maintain the look of the original set. I chuckled that Treebeard is not list with the minifigs included.

Re: Orthanc
Hey,
I added images to Steve's post at the top of the thread. Some initial thoughts:
- Wow.
- Once again, wow.
- Black slope and arch parts pack
- I count 12 to 18 of the new gothic half-arch piece in black. I still want this is light gray to do cathedrals, but black is cool too.
- Tolkien geek moment - there seem to be portraits of all five wizards in the 'library' level.
- Sadly, those portraits, the two 'document' tiles, the books all seem to be stickers.
- Nice point of connection between sets, the 'bomb' is the same as seen in the Helm's Deep set.
- I do wish that Treebeard were in a stand-alone set (probably with Merry and Pippin), as you could buy several and then vary up the design a bit to get an army of marching Ents. Sure, you can always take this design and then delve into your collection or Bricklink and make more, but it would be nice.
- Cool swirly colored dome piece for the Palantir.
- Saruman has a swap out leg piece to switch for his robe/slope. Not that we don't all have extra white legs laying around, but it's a nice touch.
- Good connection between the Wizard Battle small set and the throne room on the third level. A difference in the Palantir stand, but the throne and those two lamps on either side are the same design.

Re: Orthanc
Regardless of the black, I think I will buy a copy of this set just to have it and build it. I agree that I am not a fan of black because of the detail washout, but this is such an iconic building...
Yay for TLG on this one. Looks fantastic.

Re: Orthanc
This is super gorgeous. I want it, but at the same time...I don't want it. I love all the details, but like others...the parts don't fit into my building style and color..but it is sooooo pretty. I was hoping they would make this scene. It's one of my favorites. So I'm happy with this...now I have to figure out how to fit it into the budget.

Re: Orthanc
I like it, but I don't want it. It is well designed and has great figs, but doesn't really fit into what I want.

Re: Orthanc
I am still geeking out over getting the five wizards' portraits AND staffs. 8P I honestly don't mind single use prints like these being stickers. Plus, stickers tend to go for much less on brick link so a few extra white hand tapestries might be more reasonable.Bruce N H wrote: - Tolkien geek moment - there seem to be portraits of all five wizards in the 'library' level.

Are you sure that this ent is supposed to be Treebeard? I don't think it is. It looks nothing like him to me (aside from being an ent) and the lack of Merry and Pippin seem telling as well. I think you'll get your Treebeard set next summer.

Re: Orthanc
I've decided to come out of a two year Dark Age just to get excited about and to purchase this set. I can't wait.

Re: Orthanc
I hadn't noticed those portraits before - neat detail, but the Blue Wizard we can see in the appropriate picture looks awfully similar to a hatless Gandalf. I'd wonder if we weren't overthinking things - but then I remember the Palantir stand inside the Weathertop Attack set.Str0ngbad wrote:I am still geeking out over getting the five wizards' portraits AND staffs. 8P I honestly don't mind single use prints like these being stickers.Bruce N H wrote: - Tolkien geek moment - there seem to be portraits of all five wizards in the 'library' level.

I'm definitely getting myself one!
However, I'm more excited for the Corsairs of Umbar ships.
