[LCC] Garheim - The Dwarven Postal Service

Post by Str0ngbad »

Here's my first build (other than my CIC) for LCC! Just a small free-build for July. Comments and criticism welcome!

While on his way into the deep north to talk business with an old dwarf lord, Cirin was approached by a messenger; a dwarf with a message bag who was terribly out of breath. Wheezing and sputtering, the dwarf finally communicated his message to Cirin. There was to be a great feast on the King's Isle; Roawia was getting a Queen! After a couple moments thought, Cirin asked the dwarf to deliver a message to the dwarf lord stating that their meeting must be postponed but to rest assured that this delay was not a sign of disinterest and that he would make his way north at his first opportunity. The dwarf took a pair of skis off his back, tied them on and without another word he turned down the mountain. Cirin watched him dart down the mountain for a moment before turning to retrace his steps.

Snow or snow, we deliver your mail! Priceless!

I like it, hope he doesn't start an avalanche :spin:

Great snowscape and I think you should use the Dwarven Postal Service in Mitgardia too  Cool tree too, the horns work well as icicles :)

I am not a big fan of the tree. The icicles work well, but the tiles make the snow look blocky. I think if you had just left the icicles on the tree, it would have looked really nice. What I do really like here is the snowscape. I was surprised at how much of a slope you were able to achieve.
You would rather be building right now.

I would love to see a MOC built showing all the different dwarves postal carriers and the crude methods they use to deliver the mail of the people :)

Cool vig. The slope is excellent, as is the rest of the rockwork, but I think the mountain should have continued on the left at least four more blocks; the way the photo was taken let's you see that it just kind of abruptly stops, which would be okay if he was at the very tip of a cliff but the story says that Cirin is traveling. I love the tree. I think the color of it is perfect (I live in Indiana and we have a lot of pin-oaks here - they keep most of their leaves in the winter, they just turn brown) and the layering effect works perfectly. Personally, I like the snow piled on top; snow tends to clump in odd shapes sometimes. Great job and welcome to LCC!

Awesome idea for icicles! I agree with the comment about the square tiles, one of the 1x2's on the center stud and more 1x1's & flowers may have fixed that for Eklund and I. This would indeed be a fun contest/challenge for LCC/GOH, this simple vig has started me thinking for sure....

Thank you guys. I agree with both critiques; that the snow looks blocky and that the vig should have extended a little farther. I'm not sure how else I could have accomplished snow on the tree though without more 1x1 and possibly 2x2 round plates. That's something I'll have to keep in mind as I build my collection. I didn't think to try white flowers; I'll have to try that before I take it apart.

I'm ashamed to admit the small size and abrupt edge were due to my rushing to get it finished in time to be counted for July. I'm really interested in building for a guild so the points were more important to me than they generally would/should be.

I'm glad you all found something to like. The idea gave me a good chuckle and I'm sure I will come back to it. :)

I like it. The snow and rockscape are both great. Love the icicles. Snow on the tree is not great though. Maybe get some white brickforge splatters, like Brother Steven uses? Anyway, in my opinion you are now officially part of the LCC, because you have posted a free build. :D

Great idea, and excellent execution. However, I actually like the so called "blocky" snow on the tree. In real life, trees often times develop huge clumps of snow on them that aren't necessarily smooth or even, and I feel like your tree reflects that perfectly. :)

Clever! I really like the snow/rock work, and the snow-covered tree with icicles! :)

Fantastic idea! Great snow-scaping and icicles. :)
