Roman or Greek line of lego

Post by Jackson Williams »

Dear Lego.

I think you should come out with a Roman or Greek based line! I mean you can see how everyone went for the Spartan and Roman CMF and I really think the sets would sell very well!

I definitely agree! I wouldn't actually mind too much if it replaced the castle theme for a couple of years, as long as the sets were decent. There's a lot of potential in a theme like that!

I am sure there would be alot of intrest in this line. However i wouldent be one of them, other then to gain more brick using sets as parts packs. I dont have an intrest in minifigs at all, other then we might get some new armor. So aside from that, not really that intrested. The only intrest I have would be to see what they decide to put in the set.

I think LEGO could get mileage out of both an ancient Greece and a Roman Empire theme. The former could focus on mythology--heroes fighting monsters. Including actual gods and goddesses might be tricky, but they could probably get away with it if they didn't use the word "god" and substituted phrases like "King of the Underworld" or "Mistress of Wisdom." The Romans line could instead focus on the extent of the Empire and feature Romans interacting (peacefully or otherwise) with other ancient cultures--Egypt, the Celts, the Germanic barbarians, etc.

Long been at the top of my "wish list" for a new theme.

The have most of the elements they would need and perhaps they could make the one thing I think is really missing: an acanthus-leaf column topper (capital).

That's a very good idea, though I don't think they'd get away with the whole gods/goddesses thing. The idea of heroes could mean we get some awesome new figures and monsters!

This would be cool for me, for the foremost reason of that it would be a great way to get those epic Corinthian helmets.

You're obsessed with 'em! They would be great to have more of, though :D

You don't think my re-naming scheme would work?

I was going to say maybe they could do a Percy Jackson license and mix Greek mythology with modern times (plus it would probably sell better with kids), but then I remembered that LEGO tends to focus on movie versions for visible recognition, and the Percy Jackson movies are awful.

With all the Greek and Roman CMFs, is it too much to hope that they might actually do this? I suspect the popularity of the "Halloween monster" CMFs was a factor in the eventual production of Monster Fighters, and there have been quite a few "ancient world" CMFs, most of which have also been fairly sought-after:

Greece: Spartan, Minotaur, Medusa, Cyclops, Warrior Woman
Rome: Centurion, Gladiator, Emperor, Commander
Other Cultures: Pharaoh, Egyptian Queen, Highland Battler (the tartan would be anachronistic, but I'm willing to overlook it), Barbarian

Excuse my off topicness for a moment...Percy Jackson books are FABULOUS...Percy Jackson movies...blech. I refuse to even look at the second one after the first was so craptastic.

But back on topic, I'm going to be the only person in this thread who wants greek mythology, but doesn't actually think it is a viable theme. Percy Jackson is pushing it in the target age range. Pretty much it is read about 6th grade. Sure others read it younger, but...is this a line we want because we like history or mythology? Yeah, but we are older than the target age range.

Sorry to be a negative nelly, but I think there is a reason we got the figs in the collectible figs and not in an actual line. I have no proof of that reason, but for the most part, the collecti figs have been a way to get the figs we want without getting a whole line of product.

I think younger kids could get into a mythology-based line. The monsters would probably be a draw all on their own. By playing fast and loose with the original stories to add more vehicles and contraptions, the appeal could be increased even more.

Yeah, especially with relatively child-friendly TV programmes like Atlantis that are currently showing. I know that my younger brothers would love monsters to play with!

I wouldn't mind having product lines like this as long as they didn't cut into the Castle offerings. My opinion is such that as well and good LOTR sets are, if I had to pick between Castle and LOTR Castle would have the edge. Castle doesn't have a preset story to it; I decide what story describes the Lions or Dragons. With LOTR, there is a tremendous back story so when I look at a figure all I see is what the story has already predefined that figure to be. If there wasn't LOTR, then perhaps the Castle sets like the Kingdoms and Blue Lions/Red Dragons product lines wouldn't be one year and done.

I'm agreeing with Bluesecrets that because we have CMF's as we do we won't have them as their own line in the near future. Long Term, who knows? Years ago I would have never thought LEGO would have made a LOTR line but now we do.

Hey,

I've long argued that an ancient Greece/Rome theme would be an ideal theme. Depending on how they depict it, I really don't think it is too old for the target audience. A few points in favor of such a theme:
-They could go either historical or mythological, so there are a lot of options.
-Very embedded in our culture, so they would be instantly recognizable - these themes have shown up in books/TV/movies aimed at ages from the very young (e.g. the Disney Hercules movie (okay, so that wasn't a great movie)) to very adult, like that HBO Rome series, with all points in between. No need to create an audience for the theme like they had to do, say, for the Chima sets.
- Obvious army-builder potential. LEGO has seen the financial benefits in this as shown in a lot of the SW offerings.
- Popularity of the CMF figs.
- Playmo has had Roman sets, so there is some market research out there showing that a very similar target audience to LEGO's likes these.

IMO Greece/Rome would be a good 2-3 year run theme parallel to Castle, like they had with Ninja and Vikings.

The only thing that makes me think they won't release such a theme someday is that it's so darn obvious that the designers at LEGO have to have considered this already and rejected it for some reason. I agree with Blue's suggestion above that they may have seen inclusion in the CMF line as an alternative to releasing a theme.
