I agree. Even though it wouldn't really be in my budget, I would like to see something that isn't just 4 walls and a tiny place for the king to sit. Helm' s Deep looked like a winner, although it was Tolkien and not original(not that I have anything against Tolkien, I love it, just pointing out that Lego had to do a different for that because the subject material was like that, so it doesn't really count)

I definitely agree, I would love to see a castle, something like their Lego Helms Deep, made of BRICKS! and not PANELS! :D That would be amazing, I would love to see that.

A larger sized castle would be nice. The last couple have been nice but what I would like to see is wooden doors and no draw bridge you know just for a change.

Hey,

While I would love to see castle get some of the love that some of the licensed themes have gotten over the years, with occasional huge set releases like the Death Star or Orthanc, I'd rather see a different approach with a modular design. Instead of having one huge set, have smaller sets that could link together in a modular plan. Think, for instance, of some of these classic older sets:
Image Image Image Image
Redo things like that, but at a bigger scale using more modern building techniques (think, for instance, of the Helm's Deep and Uruk Hai Army sets). Sets could be something along these lines:
$50: Central keep
$40: Gatehouse - Gate with two side towers, defenders
$30: Corner tower
$20: Wall section (with hinge)
The wall sections would hook to all of the other sections, and they would also be sort of army builders. The corner towers and central keep could exist as stand-alones, or be hooked up with the walls. Of course there would be special figures with the larger sets, like the royal family with the keep, maybe some special knight as captain of the guard on the gatehouse. The whole idea is that you could buy as much or as little as you want. You could just have a single tower for $30, or you could spend up into the hundreds of dollars by getting a whole series of walls and corner towers, with a gate and a keep. Yes, walls are kind of bland, but by getting several you build up an army. Or they could include siege weapons with the walls, like in some of the classic sets, which would also be an inducement to buy more of them.

The reason I think this might be a good plan is that a lot of people (including me) would probably not get the huge $150 set, but might over time spend more than that building up a castle a little bit at a time. Also for kids, parents are probably going to balk at the big ticket item, but might be happy to get a smaller section, and then add to it over time.

While the MMV and the Royal Joust and Orthanc were all great sets, it was really hard to drop that kind of money on them.

I agree modular is the way to go. That way you can get a big castle and/or a bunch of little sets.

I think Bruce is on to something here. As much as I wanted to buy Orthanc it just did not fit into my budget. Modular sets sound more logical.

Modular sets would be great! If they were designed right, you could buy as many or as few as you wanted and customize a castle of any size. I'm picturing something like wall sections, corner sections, towers of various heights, armories, treasure rooms...

Bruce's idea is perfect, and is just what I would want! As long as sets like that hung around for a couple of years, most people would be able to get all of them, and maybe even more! ;)

It occurs to me that a lot of the larger castles already have you build in sections and then hook them together with Technic pins.

I agree. If TLG releases a series of modular castle sets, I hope they'll keep them around for a longer time period and keep the same heraldry / factions. That way it is a toy you can continue adding to.

Back when the modular Castle line was available, LEGO toys had a much longer shelf life than the six-months-and-done Castle line from 2013. If you were a new LEGO Castle fan in 1986 after receiving 6041 Armor Shop for your birthday, you could go into an ordinary department store and still buy a 1984 Castle set like 6080 King's Castle, and it would connect with your armor shop from 1986. Then, in 1987, you could buy 6062 Battering Ram, and it would still connect with everything else you had. Beyond just connecting, they matched. Similar heraldry, color schemes, flags, wall heights, etc.

The castle theme hasn't had any longevity in recent years. A modular line, even if online-only like the modular city sets, would be an awesome way to rekindle the spark they once had.

It's never going to happen folks. We are the minority of their customer base and always will be sadly. I know they have done a couple of huge Star Wars ships but they won't do a massive castle as it just isn't legos way to do that. It's always large castle, secondary smaller base/tower/bridge etc and then some jail and other assorted sets. Make your own Huge Castle by shopping on Bricklink

And they'd never release a 300 dollar chess set. Not Lego's way.
I'm just saying, never say never.

MOCS by the way are irrelevant to this discussion, as MOCing is assumed. This forum is about what we'd like to see Lego do.
