1272 AD German Knight
Hello Classic-Castle! This is my first post as a member. I'm an active customizer on Flickr, with a background in stereotypical TFOL modern war custom minifigures. I'm getting into medieval creations lately -- even if I am away at college and separated from my work supplies -- and my first completed medieval minifigure is Adelger Wüstenritter, a knight from a fictional family in Sachsen, Germany.
Adelger Wüstenritter by Tanner Jon A., on Flickr
This knight wears a Templar's Helm, a style of Great Helm or heaume. Under this is a hauberk, a mail tunic which, in Adelger's day, often extended over the head (or onto a metal skullcap worn beneath the great helm) and hands and hung down to the knee. His legs were protected by chausses, mail leggings, and leather thigh padding which was the ancestor ofcuisse armor. Over all of this was a surcoat (green) with belt and scabbard. He carries an arming sword, a single-handed versatile sword of Viking origin, and a classic heater shield.
There is no way that boots or shoes would have been worn over the chausses, as historical representations and common sense tell us, yet I liked the look of black boots too much. I don't imagine that that tiny flaw keeps this from being a period piece ;D
Here he is with a different, completely mail torso, without the surcoat.

Enjoy! It will be fun to be involved in the community on Classic-Castle now!

Sweet chainmail! Hard to believe how realistic it looks for the tiny size. I like your bases for the fig too

Very cool, and thanks for the link to the tutorial. A couple of questions about the mail: What is the material you layer over the top of the fig to then make the little chain mail impressions in? How thick a layer do you put on initially? Does it harden? Was it silver, or did you have to paint it later? I'm not a customizer, so I'm always interested to learn how people do things.

That's crazy! Are the helmet and sword cast out of real metal?!?!
Great work, the standard lego knights will all feel silly when they get a load of him.

Great job!!not bulky at all ,it looks like he could swing a sword easy enough.looks authentic to the period.good work.
Re: 1272 AD German Knight
This is VERY good - I'm not sure I've ever seen a custom fig like this one before - almost looks like you could play a tabletop wargame with this sucker! Well done, really love it - detailed, but not overly so. Looks very historical - like LEGO castle grew up or something!

Re: 1272 AD German Knight
Thanks much, everybody!!
Glad to hear your interest! I recognized your profile picture from my pre-2011 juvenile days of lurking on TBB, Flickr and the Eurobricks-associated forums, and it's exciting to have someone famed for their success with purism interested in my customization. I use a special modeling epoxy putty, "Pro-Create Putty" (an unfortunate name), widely regarded as one of the best for miniature-making and Lego augmentation. That's what the helmet and mail are handsculpted from, and it hardens as a light gray color which I painted metallic. For mail, I try to do as thin a layer as possible, as long as it's thick enough to push the impressions into without disintegrating!Bruce N H wrote:A couple of questions about the mail: What is the material you layer over the top of the fig to then make the little chain mail impressions in? I wish! The helmet is sculpted and the sword is a painted "Damien Blade," which is a 3rd party sword molded in ABS by Brickarms.Kev wrote:That's crazy! Are the helmet and sword cast out of real metal?!?!
My apologies in advance, fellow FOL, I'm usually into what most people consider to be too much detail for Legoottoatm wrote:...detailed, but not overly so.

That looks fantastic! Is the shield piece the new one from the collectable minifigure line?
Re: 1272 AD German Knight
Not at all! It's a nice change! I do like the more basic designs as a rule, but I love this as well - adds diversity to the mix!My apologies in advance, fellow FOL, I'm usually into what most people consider to be too much detail for Lego

Re: 1272 AD German Knight
Thanks! It's actually not, it's homemade out of sturdy brass rod, credit card, and a 2mm Lego bar. Mine is slightly curved while the Lego one is flat across the front, but I just got my hands on a Lego one and it is a fantastic new moldLeo of Rothenburg wrote:That looks fantastic! Wow! Fascinating idea for a customization, and it turned out very well. Kudos!

Re: 1272 AD German Knight
I'm really hoping someone from lego steals the forestman hat idea to create plants in future sets. It's one of my favourite parts and I just want an excuse to see it used more often.
