Top o' the Mornin' to ya!
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
Good day all ye fans of Legos! I wish ye a happy Saint Patrick's Day, and also make sure to try and have at least just a wee bit o' Irish fun! (I won't say "luck" because I don't believe in it, and if it did exist their would be none left over for the rest of the CC members after Josh Wedin's experience!)
So, I shall spend the day in jolly green and eat corned beef 'n' cabbage and those good ol' Oirish potatoes for supper! And remember why this day exists--because of good ol' Saint Patrick! Now, who wants to jig?
Histo-Sci
P.S. And don't let yer wee self (Whethuh yeh is a wee lad or a wee lassie, oops methinks that is the Scottish blab!) forget the saint from just nearby the Emerald Isle in Sco'land, Saint Columba! (He encountered the Loch Ness monster, ya see!)

Wow... I forgot all about St. Patricks day... my grandmother would never forgive it! Ah well, here in Taiwan, life goes on as usual... it is my birthday next week though, so I shall celebrate both.

The only time I´ve ever heard about St. Patrick´s day was when a homosexual friend of mine told me about a festival he had been to, called "Be a Gay on St. Patrick´s day".....

St. Patrick's day is a holiday celebrating St. Patrick (what a surprise!). I don't remember exactly what he did--and I don't feel like reading the links right now--but it was good.
I found a couple links on wikipedia, maybe they can help.

Drinkin' and fightin'. Yep, that describes us Irishmen pretty well. The Hordesman wrote:Brawl and alcohol?
I believe St. Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, and he is the Patron Saint of Ireland.
In elementary school, they used to tell us that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. This legend is most likely a metaphor.

Ah, thanks... I see, I knew there was something about him and Catholics...(other than the fact that he is a Saint )doctorsparkles wrote:Drinkin' and fightin'. Yep, that describes us Irishmen pretty well. The Hordesman wrote:Brawl and alcohol?

Doesn´t seem like I missed anything then since I think the Old Faith made more sense...

Well here at the workplace in Michigan we are celebrating by consuming large quantities of green food on our lunch hour, pinching anyone who did not remember to wear green clothing, and am I also sporting a handsome set of shamrock antenae that randomly blink with little green lights.
I don't know what the point really is, but it gives us something a bit more fun to do than normal on a Friday afternoon so I'm all for it!

Green greetings there!
Thanks for all the POSTS! Wow!
For all of you guys who aren't familiar with the holiday (Is that possible? Or are you just pulling my leg?), some of the responses are quite correct.
Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland (as doctorsparkles said) and he brought Christianity to the pagan Celts. This day was actually first celebrated in Boston (I think) sometime in the 18th century. He supposedly did drive the snakes out, but that might be myth, as doctorsparkles said again!
The Catholics claim him as their own but I think that in his day there wasn't really a rift of beliefs like in the days of the Reformation.
And best of all this is sort of medieval! (Whups, hope a mod won't have to put it in Medieval Life! It seemed so much better suited to the Announcements forum....)

Um...actually I don't know. Maybe because it's just fun? Or perhaps because he brought Christianity to Ireland and America was founded on Christian principles?
Oh, and if the English come up with a good holiday then I will also wave the English flag! The Irish may sure know how to cook their beef, but no one can break the spirit of the British!

I think it has something to do with all the Irish in America (particualrly Boston?) It probably picked up popularity with all the drinking involved, and has been a tradition ever since. I try to just take the day and reflect on my comitments as a Christian, which I think was part of the holiday to begin with.
Anyways happy St. Patty's day all. I hope you don't get pinched too much!
