Weekly Set Review: Castle Guard

Post by architect »

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 6035 Castle Guard.

Castle Guard, released in 1987, is a Black Falcon tournament tent. It comes with a black knight, a squire, many weapons, and the black feathers. The set introduced the first black lance and red octagon canopy piece.

6035 is a very nice small set. It had as noted by Ben, had a black feathers, was the very first set that had a black lance and also was the first cheap set that included the black knight torso (beside 6073 and 6074).

It would have been nice if TLC made a set like that with two tents, two knights jousting (instead the lousy 8779). It could have been a great set if it was for various factions combining together. For the black falcons I think it should have been blue/white instead of red cause of their flags.

For a small cheap set, I think this set is great for starting a great jousting and would work great with sets like 6060 and 6021.

Final mark: 9/10

This set is a great army-builder!

You know, I think I have at least part of this set - I've got the figs and the black feather, but I'm missing the canopy! :?

It looks like a cool set, I wish LEGO would make something half as decent nowadays...

I think this set is awesome, if only for the simply fact that I heart the Black Falcons. As noted before, this is a great army builder, though unfortunately not good for much else. I would definitely buy it if it were rereleased, but would much rather have either a minifigure pack or a larger set with more useful pieces.

Hm - I think I found your canopy.

I too have part of this set, but I honestly don't ever remember buying it or receiving it as a gift. I can't figure out where the heck I got it, but it is a fun little set. I agree that it would have been nice to have a companion set with the crusaders. And it is a great army builder too.

Hello!

This is one of the little sets that brought colour into the grey castle world in the children's room, and therfore I love it. For some reason I always thought this set was part of a joust scene, as an addition to 6021 perhaps. Hm, wait, that's for the German name that is "Turnierwache" (~ tourney guard).

I never thought the red colour of the canopy was inappropriate for the Black Falcons but it matched the red arch over the gate of the Knight's Castle 6073 very well. Of course a correspondending set for the Lion Knights would have been nice.

Unfortunatelly the mysterious black knight (there is no tournament imaginable without a black knight) is not wearing a cape.

This black knight made Todd Lehman call this set a "Black Knights" set. That's definitely wrong.

Unfortunately, I don't have that set, but it's very cool. :D
Like others said, it's a good army expander, and I think too that set is of a scene of tournament. :D

The little building reminds me of the guard shacks at the Vatican, or those in England at the palace.

But I guess it is really a tournament accessory.

There're always two of them ... one on the left side of a gate and one on the right side ;-)

I can't understand why they call the horseman "black knight", because imo a real black knight doesn't have any signs of a fraction on his shield. Therefore my childhood black knight had a round grey shield. And of course there's no way for a white flag ... black flags weren't sold those days.

I think, this set brought a little piece of medieval life to your castle scenes.

8/10

One of my favorite of the little castle sets when I was a kid. Wish I had more of them. They are a bit pricey now when looking in the secondary market, but worth it if they are in good shape and have the feathers. 8/10 when it was released, 10/10 compared to the sets they make now.

I loved this set. I'm not sure why its always had a special place in my heart, but it did. I think maybe because I love the BFs, and this just seems like a small set with a story behind it. The mighty knight stops by the tent to swap a few stories or jokes with the board guard. Or the guard is supplying information to the knight on the BF castle that he's coming to to after a few hours ride.

Well, this is a real neat one, but I can´t help wondering, if the guy in the booth is supposed to guard a castle, why is he giving weapons away on the outside of the booth :D ¨??

Great little army builder!

I love the little tent, I wish I had a few. It would be a good to set a bunch of those up for a joust tournament.

And that Black Falcon knight is the coolest (pre-Black Knights) that there is!

If you give him the black sword, a black saddle, and flag, it would look awsome (Too bad there isn't a BF sheild with black trim  ).

I bet no one will read or care about this post :D

Well, it sounds like you are just looking for attention  All reviews are helpful to give an overall view of a set.

I, like the previous posters, love this set. The black knight was super cool! The tent and accessories were also great. I do remember getting this set. My yellow shield was smudged and all streaky. I was upset but now I think it looks cool (sorry - no photos since it is with my younger siblings). Anyway, this was a great set with a lot of playability.
