Well I don`t often buy lego anymore so I couldn`t say but I mustt say yard sales(when you find them)are probably best.

Back to the topic at hand. As is often the case with 'rare' pieces discussions, the definition of 'rare' causes problems. To me, a rare piece is one that came in only one set and hasn't been produced for a significant number of years (such as the black sword) or one that wasn't intended as a production piece at all (such as the red ghost). That said, I tend to use Bricklink to get rare pieces, since they pop up on Bricklink more often than on Ebay. But when they show up on Ebay, they tend to be cheaper. If by 'rare' you mean old pieces that are becoming hard to find, ebay is probably the better source.

If price is an issue, Yard Sales is the choice, which is how I voted.

It is true, however, that you can get a good number of minifigs through EBAY, but that does not mean they are 'rare', and as such, rare figs will make auction bids skyrocket. But EBAY happens to be the best method of gathering an army.

Legoland is probably the best way to get rare items, but I would also say that Bricklink, being one of the vote options, is the best for acquiring such rarities, even though you may have to pay a hefty price to get them. Through my dealer, I often find a number of specialty items (plate armor sans-printing).

oh, no, not again....

I wanted to vote E-Bay because that is the venue I most often use, but in the end I believe in Bricklink. The reason for this is because I've twice been on the wrong end of bad E-Bay deals.

Once I won the 6041 Armor Shop only to see it arrive with everything... but the black sword. That was a grey sword painted black... ("Sorry I am not a LEGO fan and only guessed at the pieces" was the response. )

Another time, I won the 6075 Wolfpack Tower only to see it arrive with no wolfpack figs ("but it came with town figs so you should be happy" )...

I know wolfpack figs are not all that rare, but my point is that with E-Bay, it's always a bit of a gamble concerning what you are going to get, and/or what kind of person you will be dealing with.

E-Bay is essential for building your collection, but Bricklink is the way to go for those rare pieces.

and just to keep everything on topic, true, bricklink is great for finding bricks but it costs a lot more.

I sense some negativity in your tone... So you know, it has not always been "forty bucks"... plus I am always willing to negotiate lower prices (even with the free shipping) if people simply ask... as I have done MANY times...
