This topic turned out more interesting than I thought it would. I don´t think I have much to add to Blueandwhite and Sir Kohran´s discussion. Nice to see such a well spoken and polite discussion. (that´s what I love about this site!)
One thing that annoys me with all threads like this one though are statements such as: "bring back the classics!" or "return to the 80s" or similar things...
This is part of what Blueandwhite said, why go backwards when they can continue forward? Good and realistic lines doesn´t necessarily mean copying old sets and themes....
LEGo,bring back the classics!

I think this is what alot of people are trying to say. I agree wholeheartedly. New sets (and even lines/themes) are fine, but as good sets! Realism isn't even necissarily a necessity (although I would prefer it). Again, this is one thing Lego has done very well in the past (and is continuing with the viking sets) to have a fairly realistic line, but introduce some not-quite-as-realistic things, like the ballista-type missle launchers in Vikings. They are really fun for kids and some adults, but they can easily be taken off or modified if they don't like them.Maedhros wrote:This is part of what Blueandwhite said, why go backwards when they can continue forward? I really do think Lego is trying to continue that, as evidenced again, by the viking line.
So, I agree that lego should return to the set-making techniques, like more and smaller pieces for the most part, but perhaps with new themes/lines!

You know...
There's a huge difference between wanting the old themes re-released ad nauseum and wanting NEW themes that are more medieval in air, and less fantastical.
First off, some facts:
1.) I am not a big fan of KK2. Vikings are great, but I'm more of a knights guy than a barbarians guy.
2.) I love all pre-Fright Knight Castle themes, and would love to acquire them all.
These facts, however, do NOT mean that I want LEGO's current Castle line to be a re-release of sets from the 80s and 90s. As a matter of fact, I don't really think that more than one or two Legends per year is merited, and I'd rather not see LEGO go in the direction of "old sets only".
However, I would love to see a NEW Castle line that incorporated the winning features of the old lines: less colours, more bricks, less leaders, more soldiers, less wheeled horses/catapults/fireballchainsaws and more historically-based ideas.
And, for what it's worth, I have no problem continuing to want these things, and making them known.
You think it's completely a marketing ploy- direct from the head office of TLC's "brilliant" marketing staff- that KK2 II was better than KK2 I, and that KK2 III is shaping up to be better than either?
Think it if you like, but I think that the grumbling of the AFOLs played a part- a grumbling in which Classic-Castle probably had its part.
So, to sum: I like old sets, but neither expect nor want TLC to simply re-release them as their main Castle offering. An old-fashioned line is great, but why leave it at that? The old sets had defects: no king to the old factions, a dearth of female characters, a low peasant count. They also weren't able to take advantage of elements that exist now in the Harry Potter and Star Wars lines.
The old sets were great, and I still love them, but I want MORE! Why not? The sky's the limit!

I believe that sums up the feelings of most CC fans. As long as most of us are somewhat grown up a little we should have learnes to pay attention to the market issues. But on the other hand LEGO has become sort of a term for bricks and minifigs and I hate seeing it turn into actionfig and hairpin manifacturer. However, I would love to see a NEW Castle line that incorporated the winning features of the old lines: less colours, more bricks, less leaders, more soldiers, less wheeled horses/catapults/fireballchainsaws and more historically-based ideas.

I may just be a young fool, but maybe we need to expand a bit. it seems that the old ones were good, but a little bit um... boring? not a lot of hidden features, or large catapults. KK2 kinda is too colorful, and is a bit too catapult happy. Maybe if we made something different, like a sea theme or a floating castle in the sky theme with airships and a definitive hero that stands out but isn't a jelly bean. I hate to live in the past when we can focus on the future.
Time to go nighty night mister west.
