Good question!
I want people to be able to use a 32x32 plate if they want, so I will say no, you can add a border if you like. Max width of border is 2 studs on each end.

Hey AK, I have yet to find this question so I thought I would ask it. I have an 8x8 build that I put together but the trees leaves probably overhang 1-2 studs, maybe a bit more. Is this ok for the category? Just thought I would ask before I posted. Thanks!

"Reasonable overhang" is ok. Just don't abuse it

I have one question. For the restricted category, does the base have to fit within 20x20 to 32x32, or does it just have to have the same amount of studs? 20x20 being 400 and 32x32 being 1024.

For the unrestricted entries, can we make them 32x32 with a border, so technically 34x34?

Which is one regular baseplate. So if you do anything bigger than one regular baseplate, it's in the unlimited category.

It should be larger than 32x32 without a border.

It must be at least 20 studs in one dimension and a max of 32 studs in the other direction. I don't really want to be counting studs if some one makes an irregular base.
The border can either be included or excluded from counting toward the min/max dimension this time, since we did t address it up front. In the future the border will not count toward the min/max dimension. Max border width for this and future challenges is 2 studs on each side (with reasonable overhang if a detail like a flag or something protrudes from the side of the border slightly).

Hey all,
Here is my vignette 8x8 entry for Phase 1. It can be found in this thread:

In relation to CCG's question, can the unrestricted category be 32 studs one way (+2 adding the base) and larger than that the other, like a rectangle?

It can be 32 studs wide in one direction if it is longer than that in the other. Some qualifying examples would be 32x64, 38x38, etc. It could also be irregularly-shaped, as long as it fits the minimum dimension requirements. We don't really want to see 32x34 entries in this category. The idea is to go
BIG!.
If there are too many that are very nearly 32x32, we will likely increase the minimum size to something like 40x40 in future contests.
Keep in mind that there will likely be some really big entries, so if you want a chance at winning the unrestricted, you should probably do something bigger than 33x33, even though that technically qualifies
The border DOES NOT count toward your dimension size in the unrestricted category. For example, if you build a 32x32 entry and then put a border around it to make it 34x34, that doesn't count. The idea is that you are supposed to exceed a 32x32 MOC footprint.
For the FO/FL's sakes, it would be great if you would state the dimensions of your MOC when submitting so that we don't have to try to count studs.

Thanks AK! I'm gonna try and do a 32xsomething-up-to-40 MOC, and I ill state the dimensions! I would go bigger, but it's already in the process of being built!

For the vignette, can we make it be 10x10 including a border?
