Seige Weapons

Post by Snoopy »

Has anyone built any seige weapons (ballistas, catapults, rams, etc.) that actually work or work by themselves. I've been experimenting for a while and have a few creations including a rubber-band powered ballista that can shoot a 1x8 brick over 50ft. I also have a ram that can take down a wall in under a minute. Has anyone else made anything?
(Pictures would be great)

Hi,
I made some minifig scale stuff including a working trebuchet, onager and ballista. The best I could muster was around 6 feet for a projectile. You can look at old posts here to find out more info. Here is a link to some pics: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/2787

the only one of my working seige weapons online right now is my trebuchet. I also made a rubber band powered ballista. The ballista was realistic, it worked exactly the same way roman ballistas did. Heres a link to the trebuchet.

Siege weapons, huh? I've made so many I don't know what to do with 'em all. Here are some ideas:

Siege ladders

Winches to lift ladders onto walls

Ammo carts

Rubber-band powered battering rams (Use a goalie stick from the soccer sets w/ a 2x4 round brick on the front)

Siege Towers or Belfrys (Or Belfries, I don't know which.)

Supply carts

Ballistas

Manlets (Archer's screens)

I might have some pics later. Happy building!

Wondering about the next day
But after three mugs of ale

My LEGO Castle Tech page links to many ballistas, battering rams, catapults, and trebuchets, several of which work, and some of which have instructions.

I have 2 Persian Onagers, 3 Chinese Hsuan-Fengs (like a small trebuchet), and so far 2 Kahilawayan "War-Wagons".

I like RedBeard have made countless siege weapons. I'm right now experimenting with siege ladders and a high powered catapult/trubhuchet. Question for you guys: What exactly is the difference between a trubhuchet and a catapult?

A trebuchet is basically a catapult, just really modified. The main difference, as far as I know, is that the catapult uses a bucket to fling it's shot, where a trebuchet uses a sling. The sling actually adds to the overall length of the throwing arm without adding weight, so the Trebuchet has the potential of being much more powerful. Also some Trebuchet designs call for the counterweight to be attached in a swinging bucket, which improves it's power to counterweight output, which is almost never seen in traditional catapults.

Ballista

Post by nickharford »

hey guys, this is my first ever lego forum post, but this topic is of particular interest to me.

First: the difference between a catapult and a trebuchet is that whilst a catapult uses tension in the string the lever arm is "entwined" in a trebuchet uses the force of gravity acting on a countertweight to propel the firing arm

as for working seige engines, they are very interesting. I find it kinda peculiar seeing them sites where people make purely aesthetic seige engines, that dont actually work, i think its kinda against the "lego-spirit" somewhat, so i always make working ones.

i cant work out how to send the one i made for a physics assignment ( i am computer noob). but it was scale, working, and accurately based on the design and principles of the ancient romans, it fired 3.5 quite easily. It is also "self sufficient" as there is a crank to pull back the drawstring ( giant human hans were NOT available in ancient times), and a working firing pin.

if i can work out how to send i will.[/list]
