Troy=more classic greek MOCs?

Post by kajo163 »

Hey ya all!
Just wanted to know if you think that the new Movie "Troy" will result in more MOCs from the classic era?

I think it will, maybe not in the same scale that was the case after LOTR, but I think it will.
Now let's here it!
I'm back, and so is Castle!

Yes, it had better! I was asking basically the same question in Lugnet. I already have a Greek faction long before I even heard of this TROY movie, which IMO is the best of the other Troy movies I've seen. I know it doesn't 100% follow the Iliad and that is why. :D

Here is Hippolyta, the only Greek figure out of hundreds that I am willing to show. She belongs to the Mycenae subfaction, the other Greek faction are the Thracians.

Mycenae's soldiers are:
Toxotes
Hippikon
Hoplite
-all are clad in black, dk gray, and dk red

Thrace's soldiers are:
Peltast
Hypaspist
Hetaroi
-all are clad in black, dk gray, and brown

I've also added the Phrygians (clad in med. blue, black, and lt gray), who were the peoples that Troy was composed of and shared ancient Anatolia with the Hittite people (clad in red, blue, and black).

Jpinoy, are you sure that you don't have too many figs on your hands? I mean, when someone can refer to their figs by the hundreds, something doesn't seem fair, especially to those of us who generally think in terms of single or double digits (even if we own a fair chunk more). :?

While watching the movie, I kept thinking:

"It would be awesome to build that out of LEGO!"

Sadly, I don't have the parts for that, but I look forward to seeing what others are able to do.

Hippolyta, looks too medieval in a Harry Potterish kind of way, and not Amazonian enough. I'm struggling with making Greeks too. Have you seen Red Bean's new Corinthian inspired helmet?

The Mycenaean Greeks I make use the Nemean Lion as their symbol, thus the HP shield for their horse riding warriors.

I only have about 3,300+ Ancients figs all together. They're not evenly divided as ancient China, ancient Persia, ancient India, and the Philippine mythological "Kahilawayan Empire" are rather populous countries.

My aim is for the Chinese faction to have over 1,500 troops as the Chinese are divided into 3 sub-factions.

 Like I said, that seems like a very unfair number of figs. I might have a tenth of that, and the majority is useless Town, Adventurers, and other non-Castle types.

Can't say. I haven't seen TROY, but I would like to. As for making moc, I haven't ever thought about making ancient things before.

There's just one problem with that though, after you run out of helms, wigs, crowns, and other castle hats, and when you start to get into faces with sunglasses and microphones, what do you do? Torsos are the easy part of the fig to reroute to Castle.

Troy

Post by Magnus »

I saw the movie on Sunday and was happily surprised at hoew much I liked it. I knew it was very Hollywoodized beforehjand, but I hadn't realized just how much they change the actual story. Still, I thought they added new dimensions to and old story and kept it alive and current. PItt and whoever it was who played Patrockluswere pathetic though.

Hmm, MOCs, yes I've often mused about an ancients theme. The film didn't appear to be very historically accurate at all in terms of armor and weapons, but it all looked pretty cool nonetheless. Maybe if someone gave me a million tan bricks and a year to build in, I could throw something together, hehe... It's all on such a big scale though, Troy itself was presented as far far bigger than I had imagined it, 1000 ships, and armies large enough to cover up the entie landscape for miles and miles. I think I woud lave enjoyed it if it had been a little scaled down.

Early Greek ships like the Pentekonters (1 bank of oars) carries about 50 men. So, thats why there's 50,000 Greeks. Believe me there's enough people back in that time period to create an army that big.

At the time, Mycenae controlled certain coastal areas of the Black Sea which has plenty of forests. This was how they and their allies were able to make that many ships thanks to their resources.

Mycenae at the time also had shields that were shaped like the number 8, though not of the "Boeotian" design (mid-6th century BC) as in the movie. Instead it should've been a wood frame shield -also in the figure 8 shape- covered with several layers of leather and plated with bronze. The round Hoplons didn't appear until it evolved from the Boeotian design around 8th century BC.

The short swords in the movie were accurate in shape, however they appeared to have been Iron, when it should've been bronze as Mycenae was a Bronze Age civilization.

As for body armor.... the cuirass shown in the movie is a bit off. That type of body armor is of later design in the 750 BC era. However the earlier armor worn by the real Mycenaean Greeks were of articulated bronze plates. The earliest "Corinthian-like" helmet of the Illyrian design didn't appear till the Indo-European invasions of Greece.

The bronze age chariots in the movie were ok.
