Your proudest moment

Post by JoshWedin »

Hey All,

Plums' thread about Your First MOC got me thinking about days of old and glories of MOCs gone by. ;)

So lets take another trip done memory lane. In this thread, post your favorite of your old MOCs. You know which ones I'm talking about....that one MOC that turned out exactly how you imagined it or the one that surprised or just your greatest achievment that the bards have forgotten.

Please don't post it if it is a recent build. The purpose here to show off old stuff, that may have been forgotten. I've started this in General, because the MOCs may not all be "Castle"....at least mine isn't.

Here's mine: The Survivor. While it seems rather basic now, this turned out precisely how I envisioned it and I'm still rather proud of it.

My proudest moment was probably when I first presented my Imperial Shuttle because I felt that outside of a couple of normal LEGO problems,I had nailed the look of it. I still have the thing together after seven+ years and still think the look of it outstrips the new set coming out. All the pics I have of it are utter garbage though. I guess I did feel a lot of pride over my Correllian Star Shuttle which is probably the MOC of mine that most people would remember. I still get that "YOU built that? I remember seeing that thing." every now and then.

Trust me, I think I'm funnier than you do.
Why do I have to add the word "minifig" to my spell checker every time I use it?!

How recent is "recent"? (Some of us might only have recent things, being fairly new to the hobby and all that....) :halo:

One of my proudest moments has to be when my third MOC, "Lawn Mowing" got a lot of "likes" on MOCpages. In the first two days I got around 25 likes and 25 comments. And now it has around 45 likes and 40 comments now, plus 1000+ "vistors". It remains my most popular creation, even though the mower is a bit bulky. I still have the base of the mower intact. :) It was a great moment as someone knew to the online community to get a decent amount of attention.

But there are other proud moments, like when a really popular or well-known AFOL adds you as a contact on Flickr or a favorite builder on MOCpages. Or when one comments on your creation too.

After that, my next proudest moment would have to be 6 months ago when I got on MicroBricks twice. My first time being blogged was a great feeling.

Well, my proudest moment would probably be a certain mohawk, at least that's what yielded my first and only appearance on the Brothers-Brick - which we of course all know is the most important measure of our fame ;)

On a more serious note I think the MOC that I've been most happy about is this Batmobile, which no one really did take notice of though. So perhaps I should point to the CCCV, the only time I've actually built a lot, and a contest in which I aside from having a whole lot of fun also got quite a lot of positive feedback, if not any wins ;)

I won't tell you not to post anything, but I doubt any of us have forgotten any of your creations. :D

Post away, Katie, post away!

Well this is difficult. Picking your favorite is kind of reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally hard. I have a few that I shall share, mostly because..I can't pick.

First we visit the land of mermaids:
Image
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=192549
I picked this one as a favorite because...well I had more fun building it and it just makes me happy when I see it.

Secondly, we go to this little guy:
Image
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=822331
Now this is my first official MOC after a dark age. The very first to be shown online. Plus..he is just very very very cute. (Side note, do not faint...yes I once did dabble in space..only to find out..I lack the genes for it.)

Third, we go to my chess set:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=134191
I picked this one because...its chess done my style...okay well there is not tan in it, but that was accidental.

Some would expect me to pick this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48243528@N ... 852283421/ which I won the tapestry category of CCCVI and I would have picked it, but...

the MOC I'm building right now trumps it because I am loving every single moment of it. No, you can't be linked to it yet. I shan't be making its debut online until October. Until then...well...you shall just have to wait.

I actually have a few of my favorite Mocs.

My attempt at a Lego rod hockey game was something I always wanted to do. I was very proud when I finally pulled it off. I had plans of doing it way before I have enough pieces and way before Lego delved into the realm of sports. It didn't work nearly half as well as I'd hoped as far as playability, but to be finally able to make it after years of hope was great.

This one has roots as deep as my hockey one to an extent.
Image
I was trying to make some type of racing car when my wife set me on the path to making a sprint car. I borrowed a few ideas from other builders, but for the most part, had the same idea. Not only is this lil guy still built from when I did it about 10+ yrs ago, but I have 24 total of them still intact. Newer pieces that have come out since have made me consider tinkering with the design.

I have many castle Mocs over the years that I am proud of, but these 2 Quickblade's Refuge and Crown Road Keep are 2 of my favorites for different reasons. First, Quickblade's Refuge was something I always wanted. I loved hideouts and to be able to make my one with a waterfall and all the little details was awesome. I was also proud to show it off here. It didn't even get an honorable mention in the CC that year, but except for the eventual winner, I felt all the other ones came up short in comparison. Crown Road keep is new (only a year old) but it woke up something in me that had been missing in all other previous Mocs. I was able to incorporate both classic playability and have it look good at the same time. It also shared the front page of CC along with 3 other great AFOL's. Thanks again Trevor. Both are still built and I don't foresee that changing anytime soon.

Honorable mentions go to the two space ships (Silver Hawk and Thundercat I built and modified from somewhere to 10 to 15 yrs ago.....(and are still built).

I was pretty proud when I got many accolades for my AT-AT. It won "Best Space MOC" way back at BrickFest 2001 (it was first debuted online in late 1999), and got a great reception on LUGNET at the time. Granted, by today's standards, it's not quite up to snuff:

Image

The other "major" moment was probably being recognized by homestarrunner.com being their "weekly fanstuff" for having made a LEGO Trogdor. At the time, HSR was INCREDIBLY popular, and several times that particular page's traffic brought our website to a grinding halt. Trogdor remains far and away the most popular MOC I've ever made, despite its utter simplicity:

Hmmmm, where to start?

I'll just do one or two from each theme, seeing as i generally always get a proudest moment when I finish building something.

Hmm, okay that didn't work. I easily found a whole bunch from each theme, so I will limit myself to three from each theme

First castle one on the list would be This castle. It's the same one as the one in the oldest MOC thread, so I'll just say it won first place in the local fair, and it made me proud. Second castle MOC would have to be This one. It was (And still is) my biggest castle to date, and I was very pleased how it turned out. Third place goes to this CCCVI entry. It had turned out almost exactly how I envisioned it, and it also broke new frontiers in landscaping for me (I believe)> I still have a couple more castle creations, but I feel the fall into the "Too Recent" category, and so I shall not mention them.

Now, for Pirates, not really sure which one I am most proud of, so I'll just go in whatever order I find them in. The Relentless was my first proper looking ship, not to mention the ship that has been the basis for many other ships I have built since. For actual PIRATE ships, proudest one would have to go This one. Quite simply, I was most pleased with the shape it ended up with, not to mention that this ship was the beginning of my favored Green and Black colour scheme for Pirate ships. (Though this one could give it a run for it's money.) Thirdly would be This vig that I built for the JRC. It was a last minute idea, kind of just thrown together, but it ended up being shown on The Brothers Brick, and coming in second place.

Space....... It all comes down to Blacktron. This one is the one space creation that had me most proud. It was built for about 9 months, and had constant mods and explosions. Though I am fairly sure now that it sucks. And it has been outdone by my latest one (Which shall be shown at Brickcon) The Talana come in a close second, judging by the fact that I have rebuilt it no less then three times. Third on this list is my Space Rodeo. Another creation that won first place in the local fair (Heck, the first spaceship here won a second).

For creations that didn't fit in the above, This vig tops them all. It was my first one ever built, and it was shown on Vignette Bricks. That had made my day. And in retrospect, a couple of those pics are actually half decent, considering I didn't know what a Macro setting was back then. This Airport, dating from WAY back when, comes in a close second. Third would have to be a Minifig scale hockey rink (No stands, just the rink) that I built, once again, for the local fair. Sadly, I didn't take any pictures, for it fell apart as i was transporting it home.

Anyways, enough reminiscing.

Well! I guess I'll try to drag up some stuff that I'm proud of that Josh doesn't know about yet. :D I guess we then have to go to DUPLO. I was rather proud of some of the things we made with DUPLO, but that kind of thing doesn't get much attention, for obvious reasons. Still, I was proud of my train track that had switchbacks to go uphill (complete with Intelli-train smart bricks to tell the train to reverse at the proper spots), a waterfall, cave paintings, lily pads, and a mountain lion hiding in a cave.

I was also proud of the ball chutes (which were always photographed in their unfinished states), palace gardens, and swimming pool complete with locker room and patio furniture.

I was also proud when someone wrote to me saying thank you for starting the LEGO DUPLO group on flickr; whenever I got more people to join that group; the first time someone made one of my photos a "favorite"; the first time I got a comment; and the first time someone added me as a contact. Actually, I'm a little proud every time any of that happens at any time. Then I was even more proud when Mariann Asanuma faved a photo, because she had actually written a LEGO book. 8)

You're right, Katie. I didn't know about the Duplo. :D I truly Laughed Out Loud. I told my wife the whole story and she laughed too. She collects Duplo as well. ;)

Hey,

A few things. First, when my site went live back in ~2001, I got a fair amount of press around the web. LEGO sites were a fairly new thing, and I guess it was a novelty. I also got a little bit of print coverage, culminating in the June 24, 2002 Time Magazine. I realize that neither I nor my site are mentioned by name, but I can tell you that, at the time, there wasn't any other personal site out there that could be described as "Lego depictions of Lord of the Rings and scenes from Shakespeare". More recently my impact hasn't been in the MOCs I've built but more in my blogging and other community activity, and GodBricks got mentioned in this New York Times article (see page 4 of the article).

One thing that I feel a little bit of pride over is vignettes. I played a bit of a role in the early days of promoting this building style.

As to my own MOCs, I was really happy with how the lighting turned out on this depiction of the Moria section of my Tolkien stuff:
Image
and the mixing of scales in this one:

My most successful vignette is this one:

Josh -- Thanks for joining our DUPLO group! As member #121, you're the square of a prime. I'm sure there's a good joke in there somewhere... I already figured your wife was pretty cool for the whole "LEGO widow" thing, but a fondness for DUPLO just cements it. :D We don't make too many DUPLO "masterpieces" anymore: the oldest kid wants to "help" with everything, the youngest wants to destroy everything, and, frankly, you just can't do this with DUPLO. ;-)

My proudest moment is likely when My contest entry got me to the second round and was actually popular (being fairly unknown on MOCpages means I don't get a lot of comments). Not an amazing achievement, but still. My other proudest moment was probably related to either my Castle or a Space MOC, but I'm not really sure.
This is not Star Wars-It's real life (not much difference though).
