LEGO Ideas results January February 2021 - No castle love

Post by Bruce N H »

Hi all,

LEGO Ideas has released their results from the second 2020 review period and, in a recurring pattern, no castle sets (though they did recently reveal the Medieval Blacksmith Shop, so there is some very good news). They did decide on an interesting set, Van Gogh's Starry Night which is a cool direction for Ideas to go, and announced another set that was a holdover from the previous review, Sonic Mania (presumably this was waiting on negotiations over IP).

I have to admit, I really thought that medieval market was a shoo-in. I think that MOC had the perfect size, build difficulty, play-value, and shelf-appeal to be an Ideas set. Ah well. Looking ahead to the next review period, there are some interesting sets, but I don't think any of the castle sets will go through. I'll dig into those in a later post.

Okay, let's take a look at the third 2020 review group. There are seven sets that are castle, ancient, or related.

Bag End - Okay, this is a very nice MOC, and I like the incorporation into a book. It's got good play value and shelf appeal. The interior is accessible and looks good though a bit cramped for actual play. Of course tons of people love Tolkien so there is appeal there. However, would they make an Ideas set when there's alread set 79003, An Unexpected Gathering? I doubt it. (BTW, I never actually thought of this - why in the heck did they name the set this? The chapter in the Hobbit is "An Unexpected Party", paralleled in the Lord of the Rings by the first chapter "A Long-Expected Party").

Viking Village - this is my next favorite as a MOC and IMO a better set possibility. Yes, they have had a Viking line before, but it was longer ago, and none of the sets were very much like this one. IMO it should have a boat, even a smallish one, for better play value.

Classic Castle - Okay, not gonna lie, I hate this one. I think it is stylistically unfocused and the color scheme is all over the place. It's way too big for what it gives you. O really don't know how this got to 10000 votes.

Colosseum - This is a great design and perfectly fits with the Architecture series. It would be a great pick if they hadn't just released the huge Colosseum set.

Roman Warship - I think this is the best chance of the bunch. It's a great size for a set. Putting it on that stand makes it good as a display piece, but presumably it can come off the stand for play value. It's a well designed MOC in a theme that hasn't really been explored by LEGO aside from the aforementioned Colosseum set (though that is a modern-day ruin) and the occasional CMF fig.

Avatar the Last Airbender - Again, something that was a LEGO theme, though they only released a couple of sets. So that suggests the theme might not have sold very well. They've also passed over a few Avatar sets in previous Ideas reviews, so I doubt this will make it through. Nice MOC though.

Spirited Away - Again, set in modern times, but we get a Japanese castle and a dragon, so I group it here. You've got to love Miyazaki, and if you ever go to Hot Topic or Barnes & Noble you'll see there is a US market, and LEGO has definitely been trying to angle more for the Asian market in the last few years, though more China than Japan. I don't think this is the design that will make it through as a set, though. A little too ambitious and unfocused, it's trying to cover so many things from the movie.

So those are the castle and castle-y sets in the next review session. As I said above, I think the Roman Warship is the most likely if any to make it through. Of the non-castle sets, I really like the Milwaukee Art Museum, a beautiful MOC of a beautiful building, and also the Garbage Truck is just a great Town MOC that would fit in any Town layout.

I really like the look of that Van Gogh set. I want to try and take a closer look at it to see how all the tiny buildings are made.
