It's not prodigious, but just for curiosity of what these original castles would have looked like, if the architect had been commissioned by another faction.

6085 Black Monarch, but Black Falcons :

It seems as if TLG made the 'bad' faction a dark colour i'e wolfpack. So I guess the architect was 'bad' and made the castle dark :?

Does dark mean it's bad? The wall covering can be a choice linked to climatic conditions, sunshine...

By revisiting the history of catalogs : http://lego.patatoide.com/Castle-catalogue/

1984~1987
There are Crusaders (Lions), Black Falcons, both with gray castles.
On the other hand villagers and peasants.

1988
Appears the set The Black Fortress (6085), which replaces the set King's Castle (6080).
I don't know where the name "Black Monarch" comes from, maybe US ? In french/spanish it is called "The Black Dragon Castle", german: "Black Drakenburg"...)

Crusaders are still present in some sets, but none of their buildings.
On the other hand, appears Robin Hood and his Forestmen.

1989
Forestmen lead a large scale attack against both the Black Fortress and Black Falcons (6074)

1990
Crusaders came back in The Haunted Castle (6081)
Forestmen steal a treasure chest (from a ghost).
Black Falcons have lost their castle, the last of them are turning against the Black Dragons (6059 - Town gate and catapult)

1991
Crusaders fight the forestmen alongside the Black Dragon.
Some forestmen are imprisoned in The Haunted Castle.

1992
Appears the Wolfpack, who spend their time stealing the lords. Meanwhile, the Forestmen take refuge in the forest and are forgotten.

1993~1994
Appears Merlin aka Majisto, with real dragons...
I didn't follow the case well. That's about where I entered the dark ages.

In conclusion, it seems to me difficult to decide who are the good and the bad in this story. It's a question of perspective, from a certain point of view.
Finally, I suspect that the Forestmen having failed to carry out their revolution by bringing down feudalism, have made a secession. Some have chosen the wolfpack emblem to plunder the lords. We can see that the line between Forestmen and Wolfpack is not clear (6079 - Dark Forest Fortress, 1996) The others have probably tried to return to their roots, in the forest. unless they have returned to live as villagers.

Each of the factions had their dark side in this period of troubled times.

One of the best things about older Lego sets from the 80s and such, is that Lego didn't give any good guys or bad guys. It was all left up to the builders imagination.

Besides, that's a much more realistic portrayal of real life  .
