Really? I never thought of the crown as having mail on it. Then again, what do I know. Its all quite subjective isn't it? Personally, I always took the texture of bricks to mean nothing more than an unfinished or wheathered surface. I certainly don't have your historical expertise, but from a design standpoint, I'm not convinced one way or another that this was ever intended to be mail. Honestly, the Crown just seems like a modification of the existing flailed helmet.
