Might be a "News Flash: American Colonies Sign Declaration of Independence" type post, but...

Here's a nifty trick for uploading a bunch of images to BrickShelf: create a ZIP file of all the images and upload that. BrickShelf will automatically unzip the file and place all the images in the directory where you uploaded them. It saves you having to upload each image individually!

Yup. But it's cool that Brickshelf has this feature, isn't it?

This may be a dumb question, but how does one zip a file? Do you need a special program?

That's not a dumb question. You just need a file compression application, such as Winzip, or PKzip. Or, if you have Windows XP. you can use the built-in 'zip' feature.

Once the file is zipped, you can upload it to Brickshelf.... it's a great time-saver!

That assumes Nathan's on Windows. Nathan, if you're on a Mac, you can use ZipIt, which is shareware:

Like Winzip, you'll either have to pay to register, or click past a registration reminder every time you use the tool.

Check your college's IT home page as well. It's often surprising what schools have site licenses for. In other words, you might be able to use a licensed copy for free.

I was not aware of this... You are my new hero! Nowdays I'm on a fiber line, but for those times I'm on a modem this will be a godsend... and anyway, it still saves time to do it with zip than one at a time...

XP has it built-in--select one or more files, right-click on them, and choose Send To->Compressed (zipped) Folder. A good free program is ZipGenius (though I've seen some problems with it being able to open very old (read: I zipped them when I was in college--and I graduated in 1995) PKZIPPed files).

For Mac, you can also download the freeware CocoaZip direct from Apple if you're using OS X.

Just one of those things that I had seen the notation "zipped files are unzipped automatically" on BrickShelf for ages and never tried it until I was uploading my BrickFest pictures (check 'em out, BTW!). I searched the forum and saw that it wasn't posted here, so even though it's "Bears do *what* in the woods? Really?" to many users, it was new to me!

Thanks for the tips on zipping, guys! I was able to load pics of my latest MOC (20 pics total) in ten seconds! W00T! Before it would have taken me at least half an hour to upload each one by one.

Mac OS X also has a built-in zip feature if you are using 10.3 (Panther) or higher.* Highlight the item or items you wish to zip, then:

1. Right-click (if using a 2-button mouse) and choose the "Make Archive..." option

2. Choose "Make Archive..." from the action menu (The gear-shaped menu in the finder windows)

* Actually, you can gzip things from the command line in any version of Mac OS X. I would have to explain how to use the command line before I could explain how to gzip, so I'm not going to do it here.

I would highly recommend using WinRAR. It does them all. It is absolutely free and has a simple interface. They have been around for some time now.

It is also available for MAC users.
