Vector LEGO logos

Post by oleth »

Hi

I have searched in the past for vector shapes of LEGO logos (like the black faclon, the classic space and others) but I found nothing. So using Inkscape, I started creating vector shapes of LEGO logos.

There are 2 good things about vectors (vs bitmaps)
1) the same file can be used in order to print from a minifig-leg size to 5x10 meter poster size (and beyond) without suffering loss in quality.
2) they can be edited and corrected easier.

I am not an artist but I think they are decent. I hope you find them usefull and easy to use :-) so ... there's my brickshelf folder: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=205547

PS. If there are others who want to contibute PM me!
PS 2. I used Inkscape (instead of ColeDraw or Illustrator) since it's a very nice vector graphics editor, plus it's open-source and free to download and use. Try it www.inkscape.org :-)

Hmmm. :D Sounds like a new, innovative idea. Definatley worth investigating further. Thanks, oleth!

Any comments are welcome!

There are 2 ways to define an image file: vector and bitmap.
1)With bitmap the picture is divided in a matrix (the pixels) and each pixel is assigned a color. It's like a LEGO mosaic. Jpeg, gif, png and other formats are bitmaps but in order to decsrease the size of the file they use various techniques to "group" the pixels (this definition is not technically correct :-)
2) With vectors the shapes of the image themslves are defined. So instead of representing a curve with a line of pixels (bitmap), the curve is described with some contorl points. The other points of the curve (exept the contol points) are calulated afterwards.

Vectors are ideal for logos and this kind of stuff. It's easier to create and modify shapes. Also you can print a shape in a 5x5 mm area as well as in a 50x50m area without any quality loss. In bitmaps a 50x50 m area would require a huge file size and on the other hand a 5x5 mm area wouldn't be printed nice in a largre area. So you create once and you can use the logo on either a minifig torso or a ship sail.

Hi again.

I have made some more lego logos. So here's a list of the currently available vectors:

Main folder: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/

Space http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/Space/
blacktron_i
blacktron_ii
classic-space (needs work)
exploriens
ice_planet
insectoids
mtron_m
space_police_i
space_police_ii
space_police_ii_logotext

Castle http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/Castle/
black_falcon
black_falcon_bisected
forestmen
inn
mcn_hero_shield
triangular_shield
wolfpack (?)

Pirates http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/Pirate/
imperial_soldiers
islanders_sail
islanders_shield
pirate_flag

Town http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/Town/
coastguard
octan (needs work)
octan_logotext
firefighters
space_port

Misc http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/oleth/vector/Misc/
rockraiders
western

All the shapes were created with Inkscape (open source software) and the SVG format is universal.

============================================
Comments or suggestions are welcome!

Some help would be needed in order to refine a couple of little details (shapes marked with ?), since the printing of the parts isn't always perfect:
- On both the 2 wolfpack shields I own, the wolf's ear has something like a bite (however the part isn't scratched). Peeron & bricklink have a MLACD reference pic, which isn't detailed and hasn't got that bite.
Image

I guess you castle folks might have some wolfpack available :-) If anyone has it easily accessible, and could take a pic or simply describe, it would be great (PM me, post here)

Nice thinking. I'll use some of these, if I could get the printer working. :?

I "stole" some, hope you don't mind. And yeah, vectors are win.

You are definitely on a winner here with a library of vector images. If I knew how to use illustrator better I would be creating Lego logos and decals using vector too. Job well done.

Actually I am off to check out Linkscape now. Thanks for the link.

You are indeed right about the virtues/power of vector graphics... and this is a WONDERFUL library of images... I've copies much of the library to my HD... :)

Thanks for your great work!

Thanks for your kind words. And by all means use them, modify them; that's why they are public (if you somehow become rich using them... drop me a check :-) ). I'd love to see them on MOCs!

The usage of Inkscape is quite straightforward as it's simpler than CorelDraw and Illustator. Actually, if one has some experience with Photoshop or the Corel suite it won't be hard to get used to it. Fill & stroke color, group/ungroup and transformations (size, rotation, skew etc) are the basic commands in order to get started.

Great work, and I agree that vectors are best for these types of images.

I'm going to have to check out inkscape (assuming there is a Mac version). Thank you for posting this!
