Arrow Window -- Help, I just can't stop!

Post by footsteps »

I don't think I can blame this on stress at work anymore. This is turning into a plain obsession.

On Saturday I decided to actually incorporate one of my arrow window designs into something I already have. In this case, it was a city wall, 24 studs wide, which would accomodate 4 arrow slits according to my design.

I won't show you the result, but let me be very clear....
MY ORIGINAL ARROW WINDOW DESIGNS DO NOT WORK!!!! At least, they do not work if you have more than two in the same wall section -- and even two together is pushing things. With four, the cumulative effect pushes off bricks by about 5 degrees from vertical. It ain't a pretty sight.

So, I kept fiddling and have come up with a new design which does not strain the fit tolerances. In fact, it fits quite nicely.

I used 1x4 plates and 1x1 round plates as those are what I have in abundance at the moment. Using 1x3 plates will allow for a solid row of bricks along the bottom level.

You can also see the original crenalations (sp?) that I'm planning on replacing. I haven't decided on what I'll finally use to top this new battlement design.

With this new and workable design it will not take much effort to create a fully enclosed arrow window similar in design to my original one.

Most excellent! It looks great. I wanna see how it looks as an enclosed window! :D

Maybe I should start making archer windows. Then again, maybe not.

Very nice, I like this new design a lot for very narrow archer loops. It's simple, spare in pieces, should work for enclosed loops, and you can space them very close to each other.

In general, I'd substitute two 1x2 plates and a 1x2 tile for the 1x2 brick below the arrow loop, to smooth out the space around the loop. Also, 1x1 plates should work in place of the 1x1 round plates, and make the wall more solid (unless you're going for jeweled walls;).

I've updated my LEGO Castle Tech page (see Archer Loop, footsteps) to point to this thread.

LEGOs?? Plural?? <harrumph> That should be "LEGO???"

See, we all can find something to pick on.

Yes, I use clones. Yes, they are not as good as Lego. Not as good colour. Not as good fit (quite poor in large quantities, in fact).

But price per piece, quite good. They are useful for bulking out things, especially where detail is not important. I certainly wouldn't build souly in clone, as there is nowhere near the selection and quality of specialty pieces. My posable horses are impossible in anything other than Lego.

For my city walls, I've use the real thing (2x4's) for the top level, which has helped to offset the 'warping' of the poorer quality stuff underneath. No way could I afford the same number of Lego bricks to make my walls a reality.

So I make a trade off between price and quality, at least for non-detail aspects. We all have our own comfort level for clones -- for some that means zero tolerance, and that's okay. I have my own level, and I'm cool with that.

No hard feelings from me. Hopefully I can receive the same level of grace. :)

Yup, those would make things much cleaner. I just don't have that type of selection  My guess is that there are multiple combinations that will work, and that's the beauty of Lego. As my parts selection improves, so will the internal look.

Why, thank you very much. I'm honoured. :)
