TLC Official Color Palate revealed

Post by Count Blacktron »

I got this from the front page of Eurobricks, but I figure it is our community duty to spread it around. It would really help dialog with LEGO and Fans (us) if we refer to this as we discuss likes/dislikes, and building preferences, etc...

Seems like some goofy color choices.

Its nice to see sand blue return, but why do we need so many other shades of blue?

I hope one of those colors in dark tan. Sand Yellow, maybe? Or one of the nougats?

Transparent brown?

What are effects?

The Peeron color chart has incorporated almost all of these into a nice cross-reference chart. This was initially done when LEGO released its earlier color palette to Peeron sometime around 2004. On the newer color palette, I think the only ones that don't translate to the Peeron list are 311 "Trans. Bright Green" and 312 "Medium Nougat".

<geek>
Actually, 294 "Phosph. Green" doesn't directly translate, but that's because Peeron doesn't distinguish between the older Glow-in-the-dark and newer Glow-in-the-dark materials. This is somewhat common, however, because LEGO's color palette isn't quite as simple. For instance, the newer "Transparent" color (#40) is crisp and clear, but the OLD transparent color (#10, I think?) was more translucent. And I'm not sure if BrickLink or Peeron distinguishes those differences.

Also, things get REALLY weird with different materials. I recall asking what color the transparent flex-tubing was from the Millennium Falcon, and I was told that it was #102 Medium Blue! (aka MdBlue, or light blue. I was basically standing over the LEGO employee's shoulder as we went through a few things in the internal database, verifying the color palette for Peeron at the time) The catch was that there was a different MATERIAL ID. So the same color ID might exist between different materials, even though in the fan community we'd think of it quite differently.
</geek>

I would be interested to know what the new 311 and 312 colors are, though. They might already translate to existing colors, or they might be something completely new! Considering their high color numbers, though, I would expect they're something new we haven't seen before. Anyone know anything more about these?

I wonder if 312 is that new color we're seeing in the PoP sets...

Thank you so much! That jpg on EB was garbage.

Has anybody created a conversion chart to RGB color?

Interestingly, the RGB values are different than those given to the community in 2004 (or whenever it was). The RGB they gave us for #21 (Red) was 196/40/27, but the value in the image is 222/0/13. For #23 (Blue), the old value was 13/105/171, but the new value is 0/87/168.

I think LEGO has different standard values for their colors-- that is, "here's the color for printed media, here's the value for web media, here's one for in-store signage, etc, etc". So it's likely that there are multiple "official" values.

That's my guess. Kind of bummed, as I'd rather have seen more elements in Dark Orange, Dark Tan, or Dark Brown, than in a new color, with a another very small assortment of parts. :?

148 looks interesting.. Could it be a steel grey? Could be a good colour for swords, helmets and armour instead of silver.

It's what we would call Pearl Dark Grey, a darker version of Pearl Light Grey, which is used for many weapons in the castle line. To this point Pearl Dark Grey has mainly been used in Bionicle, and some SW droid figs, it seems:
