very strange indeed, my little brother got a pirate sword like that in a PotC set except it was bent forward instead of side ways. this and Blaze Ryders translucent bow makes me think lego is having some quality control issues
LEGO Quality Control is always interested in hearing about these things, and are very efficient at tracking them down and fixing the issue.
If you use the broken/replacement part form on LEGO.com they will send you a replacement, free of charge. All it asks is you give them information on where the problem was found (what set, what the problem is, etc.) so they can fix it.

Well thats very nice of LEGO to do. I must keep that in mind for the future.

"Trolls exist! They steal your socks but only the left ones whats with that?"
Unfortunate, in a way... but still, that's kinda cool! Real swords bent at times, and if I wanted to use a detail like that in a scene, I'd rather LEGO did it for me than make me bend my own
I also pulled one of these out of a Chess set. Feel a little silly filling out a form for one little sword when I have a bag full of them (albeit, not exact this color). What's peculiar is that the shortsword isn't even in their selectable parts list.
