The Lion Scrambles

Robb marched along, keeping careful notice of where he put his foot on the heavily cobbled streets. The torch in his hand flickered in the early morning wind. All around him, fellow soldiers trotted along, some carrying swords, others carrying banners. One rode atop a horse, and was shouting periodically. All wore the golden lion of the Lion Kingdom.
“People of Gotharc! I bring horrible news of Wyvern soldiers waging war upon our glorious empire! They come to steal the throne from His Majesty, Emperor Thomas II! Already they have conquered Gothilir and the surrounding villages! I warn you, as a valiant soldier of His Majesty, to return to the safety of your homes!” said the man on the horse, with a golden banner clutched in one hand.
Shocked faces of peasants answered in reply to the man’s warning, and some ran to shelter themselves inside. Robb shook his head. If the Emperor had any sense at all, this would not come as a shock to the people.
Robb had been on guard duty for Thomas II when the letter arrived nearly a week ago from the Wyvern Kingdom. It called for Thomas II to abdicate the throne, as he was not the true heir according to Edward VI’s will. The letter was stamped twice. Once with the seal of the Wyvern King, and once with the seal of the Lion Empress.
Thomas II had laughed and tossed the letter from his window. High Priest Patrick had gasped when the letter took flight, and demanded answers of the Emperor. In reply Thomas referred to his sister Cordelia, claimant to the Gold Throne, as a “lying wench with a baseless claim.” He dismissed the matter outright.
Only in the past few days had the Emperor realized his mistake. A messenger had ridden into Gotharc on a bloody and broken horse, with his clothes torn and his face gaunt and drawn. He spoke of the ships that sailed into Gothilir, and the peaceful embassy that issued forth. The Lord of Gothilir saw only enemies, the messenger regrettably explained, and ordered his men to loose their arrows upon the intruders.
What was once a peaceful embassy unleashed a torrent of soldiers from the hulls, both Wyvern and Lion, onto the coastal city. The Lord of Gothilir was taken captive, and the messenger had barely escaped with his life, if his story was true. Thomas disbelieved the traumatized visitor, and threw him from the court. The next day a letter arrived from Gothilir, sealed with the wax mark of the Lion Empress.
With that, a frantic Lion Emperor ushered his soldiers into frenzy, calling for Gotharc to ready its arms for an attack. Messengers had been sent forth to Ardon in hopes of raising banners for the Emperor there as well. Gates used for both leaving and entering Gotharc had been temporarily barricaded shut.
At the center of it all was Robb and countless other soldiers, who had both witnessed Thomas’ incompetence as well as his brutality in months past. Begrudgingly they marched from house to house, alerting the frightened people of Gotharc to hide. To hide, of course, because Thomas could not protect them.
I wonder if this Cordelia would be any better. Robb wondered. If Thomas were to be believed, she would only be worse for the Empire. But then again, how much do I really believe Thomas?
The troop rounded a corner, entering a new group of confused onlookers. The man on the horse began his speech once more. Robb sighed, and marched along.
The fifteenth chapter of my latest story A Lion In The Wyvern's Nest. The stage is being set... but how will it all end? It will all be revealed soon! The rest of this story (and the others I've written!) can be read here. C&C welcome, as always.

Re: The Lion Scrambles
I like this scene, as you have a roughly done floor for the village square with a good selection of folk about. For the roofs if your intent was to have straw or thatch I might have a mix of yellow and light tan, instead of solid yellow, to better show the makeup of the roof. I do like the size of the houses (if that's what they are) as they show a simple design one might think a village should have. The scene is telling in that the soldiers just started warning everyone in sight, as opposed to waiting for all of the villagers assemble in the village center. Nicely done.
