Current castle LEGO - WOW

Post by Bruce N H »

Hi all,

It's been ages since I've been around these parts, or even been around LEGO.* But I was in a mall today and walked past a LEGO store and was just floored by what I saw. I know none of this is new to you guys, and even though I've been out of the loop I've seen some of these before or even drooled over them in the store, but seeing these all in one place almost brought me to tears as an old timer castle fan. I was brought into the store by that Barad Dur set, which was new to me. Right next to it was the D&D set, the Medieval Town Square set, and the Lions Knight's Castle. Walking around the store there's the Notre Dame, a huge Hogwarts, the newer Disney Castle, and the Snow White set. (I also really loved the Batman mosic/relief set, but that's off-topic.) Anyway, I have nothing really new to say that I'm sure you guys haven't talked to death about each of these sets already. Just wanted to say hi and share my amazement about what TLC is producing these days. This is a golden age of castle - as long as you are considering very expensive sets.
Of course I have to add a caveat. This is great for adults with extra cash on hand. We still need a real castle line with sets starting at the lower price points if they ever want new Castle builders. No kid is going to save up their allowance to buy any of these. No parent is going to spend hundreds of $ for their kid's birthday gift if they're not already a huge castle builder. We need some real starter sets to bring in new fans.

Hey Bruce! Long time!

I 100% agree. I finally just got one of the bigger sets. LEGO discovered that adults love the big sets. Not just AFOLs. I actually know several adults who are just exclusive set builders. They have no want or wish to join the AFOL community. So these sets fit their wants and needs but yeah, they are out of my price range. I want the second Disney castle so bad...but alas, wants and wishes are not reality.

But I guess until a castle kid themed show comes out, I kind of think we are out of luck.

These big sets are all so awesome and expensive. Of the ones listed, I've only purchased the Lion Knights castle. It was a great building experience, I loved the entire build. I want to get the Market Square set as well, but, well, it's expensive.

Hey, nice to see you posting.

There's indeed awesome selection of larger sets now, don't forget the Rivendell set! In my opinion perhaps the most beautiful set from modern day of LEGO. From all themes. Pretty sure this forum was down for a while around the time that set was announced.

Due to lack of money for this sort of hobbies at the moment, I don't have any of these big ones. I did get the medieval blacksmith set last year though.

That Hogwarts in the picture I also considered getting for parts last year, and might actually get it sometime if seen with good price. However the market village and lion knights' castle come first on my list. Not from castle or too related theme, but so does Eldorado Fortress come first. I'm planning to get at least something "big" before the end of the year

I must agree. I experienced something similar. After a long period, when not much interesting was happening, we got Blacksmith Shop, Lion Knights Castle, Viking Village and Medieval Market Square in last two or three years, all fantastic sets with great minifigs (although I was a bit dissapointed with the number of vikings). We awaited the return of Lion Knights, Forestmen, Black Falcons and now Wolfpack. It seems that TLG has found or recognised the audience for classic sets and I believe we will se similar sets (through ideas, icons etc) also in the future years.

I am also surprised noone has mentioned the new Forest Stronghold on this forum yet. I am not too familiar with this Bricklink Designer Program, but they seem to have interesting sets.
