My castle set idea
Yesterday, in the spirit of building some more LEGO stuff, i took a trip to toysrus and ended up digging into some savings for a PS3 and bought 2 sets:8813 battle at the pass and 4894 mythical creatures creator. I figured I could use some of the pieces from the castle set on a castle im working on, and the dragon set just looked AWESOME.
While the Battle at the Pass set is decent itself, I was EXTREMELY dissapointed in the main model; all those huge prefab pieces suck the sould completely out of the set. The set is comparable to, say, the Black Falcons fortress, but those huge pieces take most of the structure and ALL of the potential for building an alternate model away. Also one thing i noticed that kind of killed the design was absolutely no arches and very few slopes, which can be the heart of a castle sets appearance
The mythical creatures set, on the other hand, was wonderful. The dragon main model is awesome, but what really impressed me was how it was all made from little, non-specialized pieces that complemented each other but had infinite capacity to be built into something else, as in the original spirit of LEGOs.
So for a castle set, what i would REALLY like to see is something like a creator set. Obviously castle pieces are way different from dragon pieces, so it would be more along the lines of the 4886 building bonanza house set. I imagine a set with lots of nice grey bricks and plates and such, LOTS of arches and slopes, plus of course pieces for gates and drawbridges and such. With virtually NO prefab pieces.
Comments?

I completely agree with you!so it would be more along the lines of the 4886 building bonanza house set.
A castle version of that set would be quite awesome.
It would be nice if Lego started producing stand alone castle sets, not attached to any specific theme.

Cool, but apart from to AFOL's and to people like us, they'd sell pretty poorly imho, because kids today want action and adventure, etc, not a accurately detailed castle made out of only 1x4's and 1x3 arches...Jacob C. wrote:I completely agree with you!so it would be more along the lines of the 4886 building bonanza house set.

It depends on how the castle is built.they'd sell pretty poorly imho, because kids today want action and adventure, etc, not a accurately detailed castle
You can build a realistic looking castle with a buncha features like trap doors, historically accurate siege weapons, a hidden dungeon, etc.

I completely agree with everyone so far...
I know a lot of kids that like explosions, etc., more than details and stuff like that.
I also think that it would not hurt LEGO to make a castle building bonanza-type set.

A castle building bonanza-type set? What sort of Idea is that!?
Erm... Bloomin' Brilliant, that's what!
I recently bought the house building bonanza set largely for the good supply of roofing slopes (can you imagine how many tudor-style blacksmith-like shops are going to be built by AFOLs now?
) which would be great for building lego town houses as well.
A castle version would be fantastic. Awesome. Brilliant. [Insert superlative here].
So wadda we want? Plenty of 1x1 2x1 3x1 4x1 6x1 and 8x1 grey bricks (we'll have to settle for Bley, I suppose.) Lots of 2x2 3x2 and 4x2's. A couple of good generic minifigs would be nice, some arches, and of course some turret pieces. (and any hopes for Minifig Packs, Lego?)
We can dream. Please TLC, no more HUGE pre-fab wall pieces.
The most wonderful thing about lego (back in my day, the late 80's) was that if Aunty Gertrude or whomever bought you a lego set you already had then you would be able to use the parts to make something else out of it - either an alternative model from the box, or using your own imagination - something that seems to be lost with the current generation (or is it my mind just getting feeble and un-creative?)
The lego Creator sets (including the Building bonanza) are the past of lego, it's golden age - please, please let it be the future as well...

My Other sig is funny. Honest.
Ingenious!
The problem with this plan?
Bley. Ugh.

I know I'm coming into this whole can of worms a bit late, and I'm not attempting to troll (Honest!) but WHY did lego switch to Bley?Traveler wrote:Ingenious!

Don't get me wrong - I've accepted the switch and got on with life - but were there technical reasons (e.g. new new grey's don't fade and discolour like the old light grey did, possibly?)

Some of us will never accept the switch.xzerix wrote:I know I'm coming into this whole can of worms a bit late, and I'm not attempting to troll (Honest!) but WHY did lego switch to Bley?Traveler wrote:Ingenious!

Don't quote me on this, but I believe TLC said their reason for the switch was to bring the grey in line with the rest of the color palette. (Apparently the old grey had too much yellow?)
I think people would've been willing to accept a new grey if it hadn't been so ugly. Eh, or am wrong on this? I know a lot of people also dislike the reddish brown, but it isn't that bad, compared to the grey switch, IMHO.
Wasn't there also a tan switch some time ago? The newer version is just milkier?
EDIT: I nearly forgot to add my support to the topic at hand, which I do support.

Great idea:D, I hope some TLC designers look at this site sometimes.
About the grey, the old gray does fade but looks far more stony (?) and the bley doens`t, its to fake and shiny in my opinion. I believe TLC could have made the same colour which doesn`t fade. But lets be honist, most of the new colours are......uhg.

Now, while we know that bley doesn't fade as much, I have to wonder what effect scratching has. With most pieces the color begins to dull after so much scratching occurs, so dull bley, what are the prospects?Ristridin wrote:Great idea:D, I hope some TLC designers look at this site sometimes.

Anyone willing to relinquish their bley in the name of science?

Matter of opinion... Although the bley/grey change is still a sore spot for me, I have to say that I LIKE the look of bley. It's not old grey, and never will be, but it doesn't LOOK bad (though old grey looked just as good).
Redbrown, on the other hand, just looks plain ugly next to oldbrown, in my opinion. Just don't like it...

I must say, I'm the opposite, I really like the new brown, but bley and greey combined is just terrible...Formendacil wrote:...I LIKE the look of bley. It's not old grey, and never will be, but it doesn't LOOK bad (though old grey looked just as good).
