Castle Peregrine Gatehouse

Post by cnelson »

Hi all--

I've taken a couple of pictures of the gatehouse and drawbridge for my new castle MOC:

http://www.carlnelson.com/page.asp?SID=1&Page=41

I've also got a PDF of the instructions for the drawbridge. I'll post the gatehouse ones as I do them (the bridge ones took nearly a full weekend to render on my computer, and the gatehouse is far more complicated). I'll take some more detailed pictures tonight and post those.

Please let me know what you think, and thanks for looking!

I really like this design, the crosses work well, and it has a very authntic look to it (at least, it looks authentic to someone who has never bothered to study authentic).

The only thing I might change are the multi-coloured posts holding up the drawbridge railing. The blue and white ones don't really seem to go with the rest of the gatehous/castle. Just my opinion, however. :D

Thanks!

I'm pleased with the cross arrow slits--as far as I know, they're an original design. The only bad thing about them is I have to do them in pairs since they're a half-stud width.

I had originally done black 1 x 1 round bricks on the railing posts, and they really didn't give any texture to the bridge. I thought it needed some color--but I'm also considering doing the bridge (or at least the railings) in brown, which would probably look fine with one color.

There was nothing wrong with the red ones: I think that it would have looked cool in red, I just don't think that the blue or white looked right: they didn't seem to match anthing (except the two blue flags, and I don't really think that flags count). :D

I like the gatehouse's features such as the cross shaped arrow slits. The building seems lean and tall.

However, I recommend posting you MOC (my own creation) pictures on brickshelf.com.

Hey,

Very cool. I especially like the very tall/thin windows, both the cross shaped ones and the rounded top ones. Those, along with the three-high crennelations, really give this a vertical feel.

The details only serve to make it look better! I especially like the portcullis, although I rather suspect htat you aren't the first to come up with the design, even if you did come up with independently. :D

Wow, that's the first time I've seen spears used in a portcullis. It's really neat... I wish I had thought of it.

Hi cnelson,

Welcome to these forums first of all. I won't say much about your moc because any praises that I can give have already been given by somebody else. However, I do wish to thank you for the instruction. It is a very generous thing to do and I'm sure many of us here can benefit from it. Thank you! :)

Thanks for the compliments & the welcome!

Formendacil, isn't the only bad side to viewing others' MOCs that I'm never sure what's an original idea and what I cribbed off something that I saw way-back-when?

I'll do instructions eventually for the gatehouse. I'll probably do a teardown & rebuild of it because there are some features that I don't like. There's a wall in the inside the castle behind the portcullis that I'll remove, and I need to ditch the 1 x 1 headlights under the crosswalk between the towers (where the flags were originally located). And I would really like to figure out a way to hinge it open...

Wow! Great work!
I admit, I jumped right to the pictures. Are you going to continue this?
I'd love to see more.
