New Castle—in progress

Hello!

It's been a long time since I posted anything here, and a long time since I built anything to post. (I've been mired in a second dark ages). However, an AFOL friend convinced me that I should share some in-progress pics of my new build—jump started, in part, by CCC and the announcement of the new MMV set.

Construction of this project began in Nov. of 2008, and it will measure 64x128 studs when completed. The MOC will split into 2 sections revealing a detailed castle interior. A few inner buildings and some market stalls are planned to help add life and detail to the castle, which will be surrounded by extensive landscaping.

I still have not quite nailed down the overall architectural style yet, and currently I feel that it still needs a bit of tweaking.

Finally, the entire build will be completed in the old greys, although as you can see, the new brown has gained acceptance into my work.

That's about it, I guess. Any feedback is welcome, as always.

No, I haven't quit, just very slow, I suppose. Amazing how you can slip into doing other things and wake up after a year of not building–and wondering where all that time went.

Wow, thanks for the encouragement. I have to admit that this has been a tough and ambitious build for me. Also, I should say how useful it has been to have this thread to browse for inspiration (thanks blueandwhite for putting that together)!

Meanwhile, I have just finished building my recently arrived copy of Medieval Market Village, and anticipate that some of the ideas from that build will also begin to creep into this MOC.

I've noticed that I tend to be quite methodical, and go through a lot of revisions when I build, so I hope it won't be too long before I'm finally finished!

Wow! I really like the landscaping so far. The rocks and water are wonderful, and I imagine it will only get better as you go. Thanks for sharing!

This is looking great so far. I was a fan of your earlier work, particularly Col Glace Observatory; I have every faith that this will be just as good, if not better.

It's deceptively simple.

Just attach the 1x10 plates to the undersides of the arches and tile the 8 remaining studs on top of each plate–resulting in a nice arched bridge. It's also surprisingly strong.
