History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
Hey all,
I wanted to ask what type of MOCs you prefer building, and why. Here are my categories:
History vs fiction vs you: This is about your inspiration. Do you prefer to draw on historical sources, such as actual people, places, events, the stories and legends told during the medieval era, etc? Or do you prefer to draw on recent fictional sources, like modern books or movies set in the medieval era of this world or in fantasy worlds like Middle Earth or Narnia etc? Or do you find most of your inspiration internally, coming up with your own worlds and stories?
Mundane vs fantastic: Here I don't mean dull vs exciting, I mean 'mundane' in the sense of 'not magical'. This is like knights and armor and shops and farms etc. I mean 'fantastic' in the sense of 'magical or otherwise otherworldly' - dragons and wizards etc.
I'll give one example of each, from various builders:
History, mundane - James Pegrum built a whole series of 'History of Britain' MOCs, such as this rendition of the assassination of Thomas Becket.
History, fantastic - Kaarde illustrated this scene from the late 14th century work Gawain and the Green Knight.
Fictional (recent, not you), mundane - Kumplekant's Flea Bottom comes from A Game of Thrones - I chose this to emphasize that while that series has fantastic elements, this particular scene does not (and, to be honest, almost all recent medieval movies and books are either history or fantasy based, certainly I had trouble finding MOCs based on some straight-up historical fiction).
Fictional (recen, not you), fantastic - Tons of stuff out there for this. Let's go with Lisqr's Sauron.
You, mundane - Here's a recent one, Matthew's Midnight Raid:
You, fantastic - Here's a wonderful series by Izzo, the Drakkhen:

This is a neat poll Bruce! I ended up voting for the You own Mundane Subjects as that one seems to be most centered on LCC builds. I really enjoy building in a realistic setting even though located in a Fantasy World like Roawia.
I do enjoy adding some elements of fantastical such as dragons, although one could argue that dragons are or were real creatures.

I choose all of the above. I love to build anything that looks interesting or challenging or something I haven't seen before. Typically I lean towards the more fantastical, but I think that is because you can bend the rules a bit when it comes to architecture.

I would have to say "You, fantastic". A lot of stuff I build come form my own head and most of it will have wizards or something like that(this is what I prefer to build but doesn't happen as much as I would like)

Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
Honestly, all six apply to my building. Recently I've been working on my own fantastical and mundane with influences from both historical and fictional. It's hard for my to pinpoint a single option.

Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
I would say You, mundane and fictional, fantastic. I dabble in other themes, but I think those are the ones I do the most. Also, I am honored that you used my MOC as an example, that was a great surprise.

I voted for all six as well. I've been building a lot for my own realm, including both the fantastic and mundane, and I love anything remotely dealing with medievalism.Armored Archer wrote:Honestly, all six apply to my building. Of the most common, I would say "You, mundane". Although the Nortlen (my realm) contains fantastic elements, most of my builds concern with building villages and interiors, with the occasional forest.

I generally prefer "mundane" material. Historical and fictional.
Cool poll idea! It will be interesting to see what folks think about the subject.

Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
It would be You, Fantastic, for me. LOTR is a very tempting area to build, but, I would rather make up my own fantasy LEGOverse. In all humbleness I have quite an active imagination, which is why I love LEGO in the first place.
History can be inspiring but it takes a master story to bring that out (Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator). When I was in school, I was bored with history compared to my interest now. Having the benefit of older/wiser mentality and not being quizzed on the material at the end of the week makes me want to revisit it. That being said, however, I think my own brain would favor fantasy given the choice.

Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
I went with both "you" categories, as that seems to best fit the LCC model. We've provided a backbone, but everyone gets to write their own stories, and I think that is the best part of building for LCC
Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
My vote went to "Your own mundane subjects" and "Your own fantastic subjects". Even tought I don't build many mudane themed MOCs, I definetlly like it. I would also say that both Fiction and History inspire me when I build.
Very nice pool!

Re: History vs fiction vs you, mundane vs fantastic
I often gain inspiration from real medieval buildings, so History mundane, other than that I mostly come up with my own stuff, both mundane and fantastic

I build in anything that I don't have to come up with my own story for. In all honesty, I never read any of the stories people write on here, I just look at the bricks.

BTW, just wondering despite the build you have for History, Fantastic, how can it be history and fantastic both at once ?
