Other peoples' avatars

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

The "What's your avatar mean? thread got me thinking. Does anyone else think of fellow forum members in terms of their avatars? For instance, I've seen pics of Jojo, for instance, but I think of him not like this: Image, but rather like this: Image. Simliarly I think of Nate as a Harry Potter face wearing a breasplate, or Troy as a black dragon. I think if/when I meet various forum members in the flesh, I'll be sort of disappointed that they don't look like the minifigs (or dragons) I picture them as. For instance, I'm sure many people assume I have glasses, but I don't actually look a thing like my avatar.

Is anyone else like this, or am I just nuts? :D

On a very similar note, I know the real names of most forum members, but I never think Pat, Bruce, Michael ..., instead I think Freak, TTK, Formy ...

Again, are others like this, or am I just nuts?

I reallize, of course, that no matter whether or not others think the same way, I still might be nuts.

Bruce

That is how I guess what people look like. (Which means you are not crazy) I have never met anyone on any forums in prson. So that is why I try to make my avatar as close to me as possible.

I think of Troy as Troy, and in my mind looks like Troy (as opposed to his avatar).

I think of Lenny as Lenny, and in my mind he's Lenny (cause, dude, Lenny's one of a kind!)

Ben I think of the same way.

Kevin on the other hand... Kevin I think of as Kevin... But every time I see a picture of him, or see him in person, I think.... that's not a Kevin (sorry Kev!)

Patrick is Freak. Always will be freak. In my mind he is a monkey. Wearing a Viking helmet. With bannanas instead of horns.

As for myself... I hate myself. I hate pictures of myself. I feel I break camera lenses, so I'd just prefer people think of my avatar instead of me ;)

If you are nuts then I´m as nuts as you are, Bruce ;)

As soon as I get one of those tan Dumbledore hairpieces I´ll create a real sigifig, one who actually looks like me :) (as much as a minifig would ever do of course)

Well, I can't vouch for your sanity, Bruce...

But I'm pretty much the same way. My AFOL life is also pretty much restricted to the Internet (I've never been to a LUG or a con), so that also affects how I think of all my "geeky Internet buddies" (as my wife says).

Pardon me?! I'm no geek! I'm a goober.

Or on occasion a "Dorkus Malorkus."

Hmmm... strange. And I rather get dissapointed like you Bruce. Personally, I look like this: http://www.maj.com/gallery/Scnicker/UAA/me.jpg rather than a tauren ;). I always imagine excellent builders as good looking for some strange reason. Maybe I'm the strangest one here :D.

Yep, you´re the strangest ;)

And that would make me a masterbuilder...... (according to my not too sane art teacher anyway :P)

I do that too. I am the weirdest. You would find that out if you talked to me in person.

Actually, I should amend my earlier statement about names. If I know someone originally from Lugnet, where we use real names, I probably know them by their real name. OTOH, if I first met someone here I think of them by their CC ID. And then there are also people that I didn't reallize were the same people at first, because I didn't immediately connect the CC ID with the real name, so I thought of the person posting on CC and the person posting on Lugnet were different people. Not to mention the people that I know initially by their Brickshelf ID, their FBTB ID, etc.

I always think of forum members in terms of their avatars. So when I finally see an actual picture, my mind has to adjust to that realization. Like you Bruce, I also associate members by their screen names. I have also thought that a person was two different entities, only to find out that they are one and the same!

Yeah I'm pretty much the same way, everyone(including the unsane) will think of somebody as their avatar and CC name. Unless they give a discription of themselves. Like say Scnicker, you will always be a chocolate bar in my mind

Whenever I see "real life" pictures of people I know online, I almost always seem to think "no way! that can't be him/her!"

That hold especially true here, where half the people have figs in their avatars who probably look nothing like them.

Bruce is the classic example. I DO think of him as an old guy with half-moon spectacles and a penchant for brown robes.

Nathan (Lord_Of_The_LEGO) is the only one I've started to picture as his "true" image- possibly because he's at the top of my talk-to list of the CC locals. But he still fades into "Harry Potter" mode...

Two Tonic Knight looks like a Johnny Thunder in Blasterman armour. I can't even shake that image to image him as one of his assorted avatars, or even as Redwine...

Sava... Sava is still Lord Daravon from his older Ikrosian avatar. And this having seen his picture... Can't shake it... Can't even picture him as a Red Dragon.

Lenny (Glencaer): is redbearded, slightly under average height, and well-built. Blame it on his sigfig, if you will.

And yes, Jojo is a Black Falcon.

Dunechaser, Graynar, 'FREAK... half the guys here come out as their avatars. 'FREAK comes out as his current, Viking helmet-wearing, smiley face. Not even as a monkey.

And as far as names go... Nathan and Bruce are the only ones who actually get their real names in my mind. Nathan because of the chat-thing, but Bruce because he had the sense (or lack thereof) to use his own name. I don't even think "Tony/Anthony" most of the time when thinking about Sava. He's just... Sava. (Blame it on my grandpa. He has first dibs on "Tony" in my mind. That or my brother's LEGO person...)

Ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto, and ditto. I'm wondering what everyone actually looks like? You don't have to have send your picture or not, but by replying to this thread by Bruce I think we should all give our pictures, myself included. I think we could start a trend here since everyone has already given out their names and locations.

So....

This picture was taken of me (A small 14 year-old) about last month. http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=99224

I'd be interested in what other people look like. Send in your pictures!! :D [/url]
