PHOTO REVIEW: 7893 Passenger Plane

Post by Bloody Jay »

Please fasten your seatbelts and put all trays in the upright and locked position.

Passenger Plane is without a doubt a very, very odd set.

On one hand, some pieces are immensely juniorized. On the other hand, it offers a selection of new and old pieces that look extremely promising.

7893 weights in at 401 pieces and $40, barely breaking the price-per-piece standard.

Now on to the review.

PASSENGER PLANE

The Figs

The Pilot
Image

I really like this new fig. It keeps in the stylized feel of the new CITY workers.

Passenger One
I love the Jonah torso, and I'm glad to see them reuse it.

The Flagger
Under the orange vest is the torso from Airplane Mechanic. I also think that's a new head. Another great figure.

Passenger Two
The only medicore figure of the lot; I think I have a bias against that head though, so don't mind me. Great fig.

The Stairs
Image
This thing is so NIFTY it deserves its own category. Maniacally simple!

The Plane
Let's get right to the meat - the door.

Image

I have quite a few thoughts on the door. As you can see from the photo, the mechanism used to hold it in place is very, very clever. However, the door - from what I've seen so far - has some issues closing. Not that it won't, it's just a bit of a hassle. It detracts just a little from my opinion of the set. However, it DOES offer amazing potential; let me be the first to say this will be used as armor plating on a mecha very fast. Not to mention, this plane could add another dimension to moonbase (can you say 'airlocks?').

The Engines
Now, I have something very, very sad to tell all of you, and it's best to get it over with now. The wings are one piece. No, I do not mean that each one is a single piece. I mean that the main sections of BOTH wings are formed by ONE piece that crosses over the middle as well. I can see it being used in large space MOCs - but don't expect to be getting a million little wing pieces with this set.

The Cockpit
As you can see, it's made up of two pieces... not entirely unusable, but coming fairly close to it.

The Controls
I'm fairly certain that's a new computer slope, and I love it.

First Class
With deluxe swivelly chairs (one side only).

Doorway
First class gets a nice TV! I also like the doorway between first class and the cockpit; sure, a fig can't fit through it, but honestly, who was going to try anyway? It's like the trains.

Second Class
Pretty standard. Red chair stockpile!

The Rear
My favorite part. Note the two suitcases, as well as the refreshment cart, which pulls out (it has, rather than wheels, the upper parts of two 1x2 hinges underneath). Also note the clear glasses, and most importantly; the RETURN OF THE OLD FAUCET. Hooray for LEGO! Oh, and if you haven't noticed, there's a second exit door in the back.

The Tailfin
I know someone'll find a creative use for this. Since I somehow didn't manage to get a good photo of the back of the plane, I'll fill you in - it's all one piece. Pretty boring. There are two large white wings on the sides. That's about it for that.

FINAL VERDICT: n/a
Figs: 9/10 (could have used another)
Pieces: 7/10 (for juniorization)
Set: 8/10 (fun build! Impressive model)
Playability: 9/10

While it scores fairly well in all the categories, I refuse to give this set a final rating. It's a hit-or-miss set; I don't regret buying it, I think it's a lot of fun, and perfectly usable and inventive. However, I know that a lot of people out there will dislike this set, and they'd probably have valid reasons, whether or not I agree with them. So I'll leave this one up to you all; but if you see it lying around and feel like a breath of fresh air, I'd say, what the heck - go for it.

Until next time,

Wow...that is pretty nifty. I have to agree with your take on the juniorized pieces, but overall its cool. Thanks for the review.

Josh

PS. The flagger's head is great, I'm going to have to get some of those...

Wow, I missed out on this set. I mean I had not seen pictures of it before.

The actual size of the plane is pretty awesome for a LEGO set. The large, "juniorized" pieces make me a little sad.

I am strangely attracted to this set. Why do I want it? I'm not even a town person. But for some reason...I WANT IT.

I even don't have complaint about the juinorized pieces. Well, maybe the wings...but eventhing else, I really don't see how they could have been made without looking as good.

Dang it. I want this set. And I still don't know why...

EDIT: How'd you get this? A deal with a European chum? It's not listing on USA S@H.

Looking at this from a castle perspective, the underside would make a nice hull for a longboat or other castle era ship.

Thanks for the info. Darn you, Jay, this is all your fault! I forbid you from making any more set reviews of awesome LEGO sets!

I think I've figured out why both wings are one piece. Like on real planes, those wings must be really heavy, especially with those engines. If they were seperate wings, they probably would sag downward because of the weight. Keeping this connected helps reinforce it.

Now to earn some cash...

Yeah, its juniorized. But would it be half as sexy if it were 100% non-juniorized brick built?

I think not.

That is one fine looking aircraft... I might have to buy me one... and I don't even own three town sets.

Great review. Thanks for sharing with such great pics and commentary.

I am really interested in the cockpit and bottom pieces for a boat idea - this one jumped into mind immediately (thanks for reinforcing the idea Alan). It is a similar piece to the one I used in my Elven boat . Image

Now to find a way to get some of these - Amazon wont ship "geographically restricted" Lego sets to Canada
Anybody have part numbers for the cockpit bottom? I don't see any on Bricklink yet.

Yes, it looks good, but isn't it what's on the inside that counts :P .

Seriously, I have mixed feelings about this one. It seems closer to Playmobil than actual LEGO. With the Starwars sets, we've seen that great models are possible without needing to resort to juniorization. The very point of a building toy is versatility. With this new plane, that diversity is all but lost. Look at the discovery shuttle. A great set with a great assortment of bricks.

For me, this set is something of a letdown.

Later.

I was expecting juniorization, albeit not quite so much of it...

Still, I'm very impressed at the interior of the craft. It's roomy, well-equipped, and looks to be a fun craft.

An excellent review.

I am undecided, however, as to whether or not it is worth getting. Yes, it is an awesome set, but no, the piece complement makes my Castle-oriented builder pause...

Bert.
Bert,

Don't post such a tantalizing picture without including a link!!!!

After searching a bit, I was able to turn your thumbnail into a link to the gallery of photos.

I really like your Elven boat. I'm awaiting a BL order of those very cockpit parts in order to make a boat as well. You beat me to it.

Hey all,

I have to agree with Blueandwhite that this is a bit of a letdown. To me it reminds me of the Fisher Price people airplane:
Image
Now, don't get me wrong, the FP people were my favorite toys for several years, and in particular I loved this plane, but after I discovered LEGO, I never looked back.

This set does look good and does have some interesting elements. I'll probably Bricklink a couple of the figs and the new printed control panel slopes. However, I just can't justify getting something like this that's full of large single use hunks of ABS (yes, I know, I fully expect to see huge gundam/mecha things use those wings, and the cockpit piece would be great in a spaceship, but nothing much for castle) (though I agree that the bottom pieces could be good for a boat). I probably have a much smaller collection than most of the major builders around here, and so I have to pick my purchases much more strategically.

You'll have to buy some of the top sections, too, Bruce. From what I can tell, they look like 8x8, perfect for Airplane the movie vignettes!
