A Norse Christmas

Norway, 25th of december, 1203

...it's freezing for days, but there's not much snow yet. That's what the pastor hoped for. Without all the snow, more people will come to the church service to celebrate the birth of Jesus. So all is arranged, a nativity scene and fire is lit so it becomes more warm and welcoming in the Stave Church. Now it's just waiting for more people to come and join before starting...

Candlemas

Candlemas or Purification of the Virgin Mary occurs on February 2nd of the old Julian calendar. On this day the women traditionally would proceed to the local church carrying lighted candles, as a sign of the Virgin Mary reentering the church after the birth of Jesus.

Equinox

“Strange to see how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody.” - Samuel Pepys

After the death of their king, the Vikingr had no reason for invasion. They very nearly continued their raid to recoup their losses, but the English took advantage of the lull brought by the messenger- not to turn the tide of battle, but to offer freely that which the Vikingr would otherwise take by force.

The Vikingr, despite their reputation, did not thirst for blood and battle. They too had taken losses, and accepted the offer readily, though cautiously. The feast of Michaelmas to celebrate the autumnal equinox was but a few days away, and true to their word, the English brought forth food and drink in fellowship- and in the end, both viking and englishman treated each other like old friends, and were merry.

The Michaelmas Treaty

part 2 of my Bear Claw Clan storyline.

After returning from his trip to San Kastel, The Crown King called a meeting with Gorang, leader of the Bear Claw Clan. They met before the annual Michaelmas celebration and agree to a peace treaty between their people. The King then offered Gorang free reign over all others in the realm under the protection of the Crown. With this new treaty, the King hopes that the Bear Claw Clan can weaken the new factions without risking his own men.

After the treaty was signed, the celebration kicked into high gear. The Crown men enjoyed the entertainment, although it seemed a bit foolish and wasteful to Gorang and his advisor.

For those who do not know this holiday, which included me until a few days ago, here is the description from MedievalTimesNet.com: Michaelmas or Feast of St. Michael the Archangel occurs on September 29th this feast was held at the end of the harvest and agricultural season. It is also the day on which all rents, monies owed and accounts outstanding were paid. At this feast there are the appearances of the "horn dancers" which were a troupe of men wearing or carrying sets of deer antlers who would dance accompanied by drums and pipes. This tradition traces back to the ancient custom of celebrating the hunt.
