BrickForge's upcoming Legionnair
Hey guys. Keep in mind the previews you see are 3D WIP. Rest assured the scutum is indeed concave from a top/bottom perspective.
The Roman Empire lasted quite a few hundred years so scutums come in all shapes and sizes. BrickForge is shooting for the Duras Europa (250AD) which is mainly rectangular with slightly curved sides. Dimensions from this era are approxomately 37"-42" tall and 24"-33" wide at the top & bottom. When protecting a soldier the shield would stand from knee-to-shoulder tall and shoulder-to-shoulder wide. Taking into account the minifig scale, I believe we are pretty close. We made ours a bit taller to accomodate a Testudo (even though the minifig lacks any knee joints).
The iron knot was a tough decision. By adding it we risk coming across as too MegaBlocks. By leaving it off we allow for decals/stickers and possible screen printing. I think LEGO even acknowledges the value of a smooth face since they recently removed the stud from their tower shields.

I believe the Iron knot would be best on it or maybe a glue on iron knot included?armothe wrote:The iron knot was a tough decision. By adding it we risk coming across as too MegaBlocks. I think they are speaking of the shield boss (umbo) that protects the hand and reinforces the center of the shield:Odysseus wrote:What do you mean by "iron knot"?

Thanks, I had not heard it referred to as a "knot".Tedward wrote:I think they are speaking of the shield boss (umbo) that protects the hand and reinforces the center of the shieldOdysseus wrote:What do you mean by "iron knot"?

I love the helmet Armothe. It is an ideal rendering for a Minifig. The sword would ift with the early Roman period. It looks like the sword the Romans used early on that was based on the Greek Xiphos. I would much rather see a straight bladed Gladius Hispanensis myself. Though, the latter sword is perhaps the easiest to render with TLC's so-called "short sword;" by making a point of the rounded end and shortening the hilts. You touched on the sheild improvements, and I am anxious to see that rendering.
You seem to be committed to the idea of making Roman gear of war, and I am happy to see that. When do you reckon that the final forms might be made?
All in all tops marks thus far! BTW, do you intend to delve into Legion standards, legion decals (Legio I Italica--rockin!) and other such Roman implements?

Armothe,
What colours will the sword be available in? I'm hoping that in addition to silver and dark grey, they'll come in bronze for my Greek hero
Also, will the swords be available separately or only as part of a Roman set? (I'm hoping separately.)
Thanks,
